Exmoor zoo have put a planning application to expand the zoo by an extra 10 acres, plans include expanding the tapir paddock , bringing in larger owl species and striped hyena along with another species of dog - possibly bush dog, golden jackal or aardwolf.
 
Sounds great but have you got any links?
And aardwolves aren't dogs... ;)

Pink Backed Pelicans and Ural Owls have both joined the collection this week
 
A new litter of 0.0.3 Puma cubs were born 3 weeks ago. Everything going to plan so far :)
 
The list on Zootierliste of Caracal holdings in the UK is accurate as far as I know:

Exmoor Zoological Park has 1,1,1

Wingham Wildlife Park has 1,1

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park has at least 1,1 - but considering that collection often has offshow breeding pairs, the total could be more.

Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park has 0,1 - this individual is very elderly and offshow.
 
Construction of new enclosures is now under way. One for cranes and two others that are hopefully for Bush Dogs and Grey Wolves. There is talk of getting Spotted Hyena's, but no enclosure is built for such yet. The Tapir enclosure is to expanded into the adjacent field and this is were the future Hyena enclosure would be if they do go ahead..
 
Excellent news; even if Brown Hyena would have been an even better choice :p

Problem is Brown Hyena's are very rare. There's only 17 in captivity world wide I believe, 5 of which are at Port Lympne. I was there today and the keepers told me that the new enclosures were for cranes and bush dogs & Grey Wolves. They haven't got the Bush Dogs & Wolves yet, the enclosures need to be finished first. So could change, but it looks like they should have no problem acquiring Wolves & bush dogs on completion of the enclosures.

The Keeper also said the Hyena's would go in the field by the Tapirs. But no work has started there yet. Spotted Hyena's are only in one other Uk Zoo I believe. So not sure if they'll be easy to get hold of or not?

They are trying to even out the numbers as at the moment they do have quite a few cat species and only 3 canines (though Hyena's aren't canines of course). I'm really looking forward to them getting more animals. I personally prefer canines and have never seen any Hyena's in captivity before.

Sadly, Port Lympne only have the pair of Brown Hyena now - the young male bred at the collection was sent to a breeding site in South Africa a few months ago.

As for the Spotted Hyena, they have been breeding at Colchester and elsewhere in Europe so hopefully might be available.
