Exotic Birds in Australia

That's why they would need an IRA. I believe one for Psittacines is in progress

That’s correct.

The following exotic Psittacines are on the live import list:

Blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna)
Scarlet macaw (Ara macao)
Green-winged macaw (Ara chloropterus)
Red-fronted macaw (Ara rubrogenys)
Red-shouldered macaw (Diopsittaca nobilis)
African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus)
Red lory (Eos bornea)
Chattering lory (Lorius garrulus)
Black-capped lory (Lorius lory)
Dusky lory (Pseudeos fuscata)
Alexandrine parakeet (Psittacula eupatria)
Ringneck parakeet (Psittacula krameri)
Golden parakeet (Guaruba guarouba)
Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva)
Yellow-fronted Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala)
Maroon-bellied conure (Pyrrhura frontalis)
Black-capped caique (Pionites melanocephalus)
Peach-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis)
Aaaa

You would hope they will upate the list to include species that are in very low numbers in this country - pretty much everything on the list is relatively common now, and i doubt anyone would spend the money to import more unless it was a mutation that wasn't already here. Hyacinths, Military, Buffons macaws for example need new genetics here

How difficult would it be to include these?

I personally hope they add Kea to the list.

An article in the most recent issue of Australian Birdkeeper magazine confirmed the presence of Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot in Australian aviculture. Quote from the relevant article: "Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots are the only species of hanging parrots I am aware of in Australia."
Obviously doesn't necessarily mean anything but I still thought this was interesting.

Blue Crowned Hanging Parrots - unusual and rare

Not very, the last time the gates were open. Macaws were imported in large quantities, which has led to them being fairly numerous today.
Last I heard the IRA for parrots was apparently just about finished that was about 2 years ago?

Correct, I believe it's still in progress though unfortunately.

Probably due to the fact that the original species list comprised of species mostly in good numbers here. Where species that people were wanting to import were left of. It wouldn't surprise me to see it be drawn out but with added specie included.

Covid did a number on captive birds in Aus. Many breeders paused breeding during covid and the inability to have pets when renting for a lot of people with the rental crisis has really reduced things.

Two more species can be added to the list - Violet-necked Lory, Eos squamata and Olive-headed Lorikeet, Trichoglossus euteles. Both are currently at Maleny Bird World. I knew about the Violet-necked Lories being in Australia in small numbers (lots of hybrids though) but not the Olive-headed Lorikeets so that was a complete surprise. They are kept with Green-naped and Ornate Lorikeets among others.

Wonderful news indeed, I guess there has been no movement with the IRA for the Importation of Macaws?

If you’re referring to the psittacine IRA (which covers a heck of a lot more than just macaws), the latest page update is from April this year and indicates it’s at the Finalise Risk Assessment Stage.

Psittacine birds (household pets and aviary) - DAFF

It’s a slow process, but it’s good to see it progressing. :)

Not that this will have much to do with zoos, though of course they can use if if they want. But it will be good if it reduces smuggling.

Out of curiosity, is this seller legitimate?
Peacocks Australia Qld

They claim to have, among other species, vulturine guineafowl, Elliot's pheasant, and Edward's pheasant, and large numbers of green peafowl mutations. It just seems way too good to be true, and the "About Us" page is full of comments including "it is well documented and common knowledge their peafowl and pheasants are of the highest quality and purity available in Australia and possibly the world" and similar claims.

No its a well known scammer who has set up a whole site of forums and then posts lots of replies under different names. Noone can get into the members only section, and we certainly dont have most of what he claims to have. Just reading the price list for his birds shows how little grasp of reality he has!

I did presume it was fake, the species list especially seemed quite ridiculous knowing what we had available in the country. Thanks for the confirmation

Sorry for a very ignorant question - why is quarantine not an option? Especially considering long-lifespans of many bird species, would a lengthy quarantine period not be possible?

That’s actually a really good question.

I know an exception was made for Auckland Zoo (who like Australia has an import ban) to import a flock of Greater flamingos. The condition was the birds had to be raised from eggs in an approved pre-export isolation facility. There’s more information about it here:

NZ Government

It appears nothing like this has ever been repeated and I’m tempted to say Australia may consider even the above insufficient to completely satisfy their biosecurity concerns given its implications to the agricultural industry etc.
