I have wondered this aswell Jacobea, i too am not fully educated on the North Chinese Leopard SSP, but there seems to be a few good breeding pairs throughout Europe. It was in the news earlier this year that a zoo in Germany just had two new cubs born, and two facilities in the UK both recieved North Chinese Leopards from abroad over 2007 & 2008, all for breeding purposes... Without wanting to offend, it seems as if the EFBC is 'giving up' on this species for no apparent reason...
 
I just received the fall 2009 newsletter from EFBC which has the following statement:

"A breeding age female Persian Leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) has arrived and it is hoped we will see a renewed effort to save this valuable sub-species within America. Her name is Kiana and came to us from Zoo Parc de Beauval, France. We will also be importing a young male as a mate for her."
This is exciting news. EFBC currently has one male persian (too old to breed) as well as large breeding populations of n. china and amur leopards.
 
Interesting. It's unfortunate so many subspecies got kicked to the curb with the focus on the Amur subspecies.
 
Three fishing cats were born in July 2011 and are apparently doing well.

A male persian leopard arrived a couple weeks ago (early September 2011) from a zoo in Denmark. I presume he is an intended mate for their female, who arrived from France a couple years ago. Their current male, from San Diego Zoo, is too old to breed I am sure (if he is even still alive). This is the only U.S. facility working with persian leopards. For you trivia buffs, persians are the largest of the leopard subspecies.
 
At the end of April 2012, they received an intended breeding pair of one year old clouded leopards. Website says they are from "a facility in Kansas" which almost certainly means Tanganyika Wildlife Park.
 
A pair of jaguars (1.1) were born on June 27, 2012.

A male puma, just under two years old, arrived this month (July 2012).
 
The long anticipate and very much delayed Project Tiger is now complete. The residents, a pair of malayan tigers, went on display last month. (I could not find a reference to which zoo they came from).

It did not take long for their new black footed cat breeding program to produce results. One kitten born August 7, 2014.
 
Sounds like a fascinating park. I do have a soft spot for taxonomic organization. Glad to hear about the black-footed cats.
 
A female Snow Leopard is due to arrive from Servion in Switzerland this week
 
According to Facebook, they have received three snow leopards from Europe. Source facilities are:
Servion Zoo, Switzerland (mentioned above)
Norden's Ark, Sweden
Stuttgart Zoo, Germany
 
Just to give everyone a factual update on what is going on here at EFBC please review the following:
The snow leopard imports are to augment the North American SSP population as all are unrelated to anything here. There will be one more female coming in from Tierpark Berlin shortly. All of these cats are under 2 years of age so it will be a while before any breeding takes place.
Earlier posts regarding our N. C. leopards (P.p.japonensis) and why we do not import some from Europe, unfortunately all specimens throughout Europe are closely related to our cats. The only place we can get unrelated is from China and this is an almost impossible task.
As for the Persian (saxicolor) we have 1.1. These were transferred to us by the EEP. Unfortunately the pair are not compatible but at the end of this month we are going to do an IUI with the pair. Hopefully something comes of it. We will be working with Martina the EEP coordinator to possibly bring in more.
 
Your welcome. I'll try to keep things up to date as best I can. We will have 1.3 sand cats coming in from Novosibirsk shorty also. We dispersed most of the last litter only keeping one female. 2 males went to Kansas City and the other female is leaving next week going to the National Zoo.

On a sad note we lost one pair of BF cats due to amyloidosis. Everyone thought that this group was not going to be predisposed to this devastating disease but unfortunately it was not to be. We are monitoring the other pair closely. We did get one baby off the pair, we are watching him closely also.

A quick note to update everyone, we just had another birth of 3 black footed cats. They are now 1 week old and mother and kittens are doing well.

This is really great - we need more of these small cats in USA. Now if we could just convince one of the zoos here in Arizona to get them.
