NOTE: This list has been updated with much more information. The new thread can be seen here: Exotic Mammals in Australian Zoos

This thread had its genesis in a thread by CGSwans, which can be seen here: http://www.zoochat.com/24/exotic-mammals-each-australian-zoo-123597/

I have changed the format from “by zoo” in CGSwans' thread to a taxonomic one which makes it easier to see what is about in Australia. The list includes all exotic mammals found in Australian zoos (and in some cases in private hands and research facilities because these may enter zoos at any point). I have put subspecific names only where it is relevant. I also know that locality data for some species won't be complete, especially the deer and camelids, so I have made notes to that effect where appropriate. I have put individual numbers only for those species where there are just two or three in the country and they aren't likely to be increased in the foreseeable future.

Elephants no longer at Australia Zoo, Water Buffalo no longer at Alma Park, and Zebras are now at Darling Downs, otherwise, a great list! V interesting!
And it appears Cudgee Creek Wildlife Park has closed, with whatever monkeys they had, I found a photo of the owner with a capuchin, but couldn't find out what the 7 others were.......
Wings Wildlife Park in Tasmania also list Alpaca, Bison, Camel, Water Buffalo and Crab Eating Macaques as being in their collection

thanks.

I should have added Darling Downs for zebra but forgot.

My understanding of the Australia Zoo elephants is that they are only temporarily off-site so I have left them on the list as holders.

I have added the Wings Wildlife Park species you note, and removed Alma Park from the water buffalo list.

I still don't understand how Australia Zoo is taken seriously without having primates on display.

Sabu- the last of the elephants that were displayed at Australia Zoo- definately won't be going back. According the the 'Regional Census and Plan 2013' they wish to import their own from the Sumatran sub-species.

ah, okay in that case I will remove them. They can be re-added if they get them back again.

How did Monarto come by Persian Fallow? Private collection?

Cheers Khakibob

PS
The list misses other species only in private collections,e.g sika, nilgai, M rusa.

presumably from a private collection. My understanding is that all the "Mesopotamian" fallow deer in Australia are hybrids with European fallow deer anyway?

I have added in nilgai as "in private hands only" because I haven't seen any zoos claiming to display them. The deer list notes at the top (under the heading "Cervidae") that all species are also held in private hands so I hadn't bothered putting it after each individual species. If you know any other ungulates which are held privately which I haven't mentioned as being so, then feel free to post.

Surely Palm Squirrel should include Perth, being the origin of all in the country?

Thought the Mueller's gibbons and Sitatunga were no longer left in the country.

-Perth haven't displayed Palm Squirrels for quite a long time.
-Single Mueller's Gibbon still displayed at Taronga, saw it a couple of months ago.
-There was one Sitatunga left at Western Plains, but I don't know if it is still there or not.

I think there are palm squirrels still running around the grounds of the Perth Zoo, but definitely not in enclosures or anything.

yes wild ones can be seen in the zoo grounds, but they are no longer part of the zoo's captive stock.
