Is anyone planning on doing a Capybara population list? I'd be really interested in seeing it. I have no idea how to research it myself so that's why I'm asking if anyone else knows

Nobody else has registered an interest in creating a Capybara population list, so feel free to go for it.

To create a list, first you need the information. There won’t be a lot online, but you could either email each facility or create a research thread in the Australian forum and ask others to help fill in the blanks.

These are the existing holders:

Brooklands, Wellington, Willowbank, Altina, Crocodylus, Currumbin, D'Aguilar Wildlife, Darling Downs Zoo, Gorge, Hunter Valley, Sydney Zoo, Taronga, Tasmania Zoo, Wildlife HQ, Wings Wildlife Park.

*Black And White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata) – Darling Downs Zoo; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Melbourne; Mogo; National Zoo; Perth; Western Plains Zoo; Wildlife HQ

Altina Wildlife Park now have Black and white ruffed lemur:

Reported on socials:

In conjunction with Darling Downs Zoo, Altina have imported, the gorgeous male “Tsiky”, from Hamerton Zoological Park in England. This new genetic line will help with the Australasian Conservation Program immensely, and adds versatility to the breeding program!

Kintana, the Australian born female, with masses of personality, should make a fine match to our shy, but stunning new boy.

I’d love to see photos of those hybrid pups.

This description was offered:

Referring to the dingo x wolf hybrids, at birth these animals exactly resemble dingo pups, but later they began to grow more like their lupine father. Their hair is softer and longer then that of the dingo, and their head closely resembles the wolf. The animals are also taller than the dingo. The hair is longer on the neck, which is another characteristic of the wolf.

When about three months old the only dog of the litter died, but the bitches were run with pure dingoes and one was placed with the wolf, and owing to lack of space these latter two were sent as a gift to the Melbourne Zoo. On June 23 last one of the hybrid bitches gave birth to a litter of three pups by a dingo. These pups at pre-sent are exactly like a dingo.

Monarto Safari Park now has Common Hippopotamus:

Monarto Safari Park now have Common hippopotamus. Brindabella (1990) and Pansy (2013) were transferred two days ago to Monarto Safari Park.

Information via Safari Bus tour/keeper talk at Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Very glad they shipped just before summer!

Not sure if this has been asked already, but is there still interest in bringing African elephants back to the Australasian region? Given Monarto, Werribee and Taronga Western Plains are set on Asian elephants...
