Exotic Mammals in Australian Zoos

Hunter Valley zoo have received a male and female sibling pair of white lions from Queensland, presumably Darling Downs

just a note: I can no longer edit the original posts because the new forum has a lower character-allowance per post than the old forum (so the entire post remains from the old forum, but if I try to change anything it says I can't do that).

There have been a number of changes recently (new animals, animals dying, etc - e.g. the various ones noted above, and DDZ getting giraffes) but I haven't had much internet time for the last couple of months due to travelling. When I get time I'll go through the threads and list all the changes here.

(Or, conversely, if someone else wants to look through the threads from the last couple of months and make a little list and post it, that would be a time-saving for me - my last update post was in November, post #109 on the previous page)

*Leopard (Panthera pardus) – one male at Gorge (black panther)

The last of the many Leopards which used to be in Australian zoos. This one was bred at Gorge in 1994, the parents being ex-Melbourne.
I contacted the Gorge Wildlife Park today and can confirm that their black leopard is still there, and still on display. He is getting old apparently (23-24 years) so is not on display as much as he used to be.

Do you know what zoos will import them? This will be a great import for the zoos that get them, public and Australia to have a new specie?

from the only photo I have seen of them, the cubs all appear to be normally-patterned cheetahs and not king cheetahs.

from the TWPZ news thread: Cuddles, the last African Elephant in Australia has died.

In 2016 we lost Tree Shrews; and in 2015 several species (both Slow Lorises, Bornean Gibbon, and Dhole).

Wait, there are no dhole left at Toronga!? What happend to them all?
the answer is explicitly in the opening posts of the thread!

*Dhole (Cuon alpinus)
One captive-bred pair was imported to Taronga in Feb 2006 from Cambodia. One female pup was born in August 2006 and one male pup in July 2007. The father and daughter went to Singapore Night Safari in 2009, and he has since bred with an unrelated female there (in 2011). Both animals remaining at Taronga (the mother and son) died around Feb 2015.

Any idea when this is likely to happen? It must be pretty exciting news for you guys down under! :)

I believe in the near future, I hope more zoos here will join the two zoos in holding them!

I'm not sure it will be the "near" future, but I guess that depends on definition. I haven't heard anything recently, so I don't know for sure. It has certainly been in the works for ever.
