Exotic Mammals in Australian Zoos

Yeah i was told by staff they sounded pritty confident in saying a year or a bit longer but in the world of Covid and stuff its not 100 percent until they are on the plane

Many imports have been cancelled - in the past few years there’s been Taronga’s chimps, Orana’s orangutans, Orana’s gorillas, Auckland’s orangutans, Taronga’s tigers, Australia Zoo’s elephant. And that’s just the imports we’ve heard about.

Which chimps were these?

They were supposed to receive these females from Kolmarden Wildlife Park in 2015:

0.1 Marie (2005)
0.1 Marit (2006)

Given Naomi (also at the natural age of dispersal) was the only female to integrate seamlessly into the community, it’s a real shame these two young females never arrived as well.

I don’t know the reason for the cancellation, but imagine it was from Kolmarden’s side as there was a huge demand for females in the region at that time and another facility would have gladly taken them via Taronga like Monarto did with Hannah.

I would be surprised if we see any more imported elephants at Australia zoo

I’m not holding my breath on the Indonesian bulls. Australia Zoo will likely let the older cows lapse into non reproductive cows over the next years (especially Megawati given her health); and then at the eleventh hour decide to breed from the younger two with a bull from within Australia.

Possibly one of the Sydney bulls would be good to start an entirely new line. Christina is currently twelve, so an import would need to be within the next five years or so if she's planned to breed. Raflesia though, gives them more time. She's only eight, and Australia could afford to wait a decade before breeding here (only if really needed). It would be a priority if one was imported soon though.

*Nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) - Monarto; Sydney Zoo; Werribee

Seven animals (3.4) were imported from New Zealand in November 2016. A further eight (2.6) were imported from New Zealand in June 2018. Sydney Zoo obtained their first Nyala (all males) in April 2022.
A few updates on the Nyala. Sydney Zoo's males came from Werribee Open Range Zoo specifically. To add to the list of NZ imports, Monarto Safari Park also recently imported two males from Auckland Zoo in April to become their new breeding males.
*generic Tigers (Panthera tigris) (hybrids and whites) – Australia Zoo; Dreamworld; Mogo; National; Sydney Zoo. Also at Zambi (not open to public).
Ballarat received a hybrid tiger from Dreamworld today joining their Sumatran male as reported on the news thread and social media.

*Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) – one pair at Wild Cat Conservation Centre
The Wild Cat Conservation Centre have imported a breeding pair of Clouded Leopards from the United States:

"Some exciting news to end the week with! A big welcome to Mark and Moana, our new clouded leopards! Their arrival at the centre is a milestone and an important step as we are the only centre in Australia dedicated to conserving this species. Thanks go to Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and Tanganyika Wildlife Park for their efforts in helping us establish the first ever conservation breeding program for Clouded Leopard in Australia."

Fantastic news! Hopefully this leads to a successful breeding programme that can supply some of the other zoos with this intriguing felid. I imagine Melbourne could be interested as they explore replacement species for their elephants.

No and likely never will. Species from the Suidae family are strictly forbidden due to the risks to the Australian agricultural industry. A great shame as we’d also love to have Babirusa in the region.

*Meerkat (Suricata suricatta) – Adelaide; Altina; Australia Zoo; Ballarat; Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park; Crocodylus; D'Aguilar Wildlife; Darling Downs; Gorge; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park; Mansfield Zoo; Melbourne; Mogo; Monarto; National Zoo; Oakvale; Paradise Country; Perth; Rockhampton; Royal Melbourne Childrens Hospital; Shoalhaven; Snakes Downunder; Sydney Zoo; Symbio; Taronga; Tasmania Zoo; Walkabout Park Wildlife Sanctuary; Werribee; Western Plains Zoo; Wildlife HQ; Wings Wildlife Park; Zoodoo. Also at Zambi (not open to public).
Zoos Victoria's newest member Kyabram Fauna Park received five Meerkats from Sydney Zoo yesterday afternoon - reported on social media.

At the moment, how many Aussie zoos have purebred zebra subspecies?

Two Australian zoos have Grant’s zebra - Darling Downs Zoo and ZooDoo. They were sourced from the USA in a group import. Regionally, speaking, Hamilton Zoo in New Zealand has a Grant’s zebra mare; while a Grant’s stallion is also held at a private facility (Gibb’s Farm).

All other facilities in the region hold generic zebra, though Werribee formerly held Chapman’s zebra, which have since be hybridised with generic stock.
