Exotics in Australia not being held at Zoos

I thought it might be a good idea if we made a thread for this as many threads have been going this way (might be worth doing one for NZ too, any takers?).

There are many Exortic nimals held by Unis and the like, aswell as the exotic Farm Species, Lets try and make a list, i will edit this post will all the new ones. Lets not bother about fish and birds try to stick to things taht are more zoo-ey
Ohh and everyone from other countrie can we please try and keep this aussie:)!

List!
American Bison - Farming
Blackbuck - Farming
Nilgai - Hunting
Banteng - Hunting, Farming?
Asian Water Buffalo - Hunting, Farming
Guanaco - Any left?
Various Deer, Red, Fallow, Axis, Sambar, Rusa - Hunting Farming
Sika - see below
Wapiti - Anyone clarify, Monty?
Hog Deer - Whats happening with them now?
Dromedary Camels
Nile Lewche - Tippery
Zebra - Tippery
Hymadryas Baboon - Royal Prince Alfred Hosp, renal research, approx 150 animals
Japanese Macaque - Launceston City Gardens, Tassie
Long-Tailed - See below
Pig-Tailed Macaque - held at the National Macaque Facility at Werribee. There are approximately 150 Macaques at this facility divided into 10 colonies kept in separate rooms. The Australian National University in Canberra has 9 Macaques species unkown.
Marmosets (common?) - At the CSIRO in SA, national marmoset colony, 15 pairs imported from the UK. Also some at Uni New Elngland, in Armidale NSW, under Dr Lesley Rodgers
Other Primates - there is a colony of 70 unspecified Primates being used by the Department of Defence, primarily for malarial experiments.

I have also heard of some Hyena in some uni, dunno where

Note to anyone wanting to use this list for school, etc...: Some of these facts may be outdated or wrong. But it is the info we have found
 
Also ben- (btw great research) That the above primate info was from 97- hard to beelive that was 11 yrs ago :o. anyway may be a few less now days.

Also don't forget the group of macquaes in Tasmania in the park. I carnt remeber ill look it up
 
yeah there may be less but there may be more!
That tassie park, called ZooDoo, i will regard as a zoo, like the rockhapmton zoo, seeing as they have 2 exhibits now (Macaques and the Bullens Tigers)
 
good idea for a new thread ben, but your list is a mess! :)

"crab-eating macaque" is a poorer name for the long-tailed macaque. so thats the same species. i would be surprised if there were no rhesus macaque in research labs here either.

the only nilgai i know of are the ex-tippery animals and whilst they are owned by a hunting ranch, can they be hunted, what kind of liscence are they held under and do they really qualify? if so, you may want to add the other species that ranch acquired ie; lechwe and zebras.

the complete list of deer currently living wild in australia are as follows:

chital (axis) deer
hog deer
sambar deer
rusa deer
red deer
fallow deer

i'm almost certain sika and wapiti are farmed here also.

oh, and dromedary camels.

i believe Nilgai are held at a Hunting Ranch in SA aswell, Near Mount Gambier.

maybe we could steal them and just drop them off at monarto, think they are about the only guys who still keep em'....

i really like nilgai - saw one once, a big female just standing by the train line in india. she didn't run just stood there browsing.
 
the ones at Monatro are great, i beleive there is still a pair, i remember when i first went there in 2003 seeing atleast 6!
 
yeah they are fizzling. last i saw the records were 2.2

for the love of god i can't understand why the "terai" paddock isn't a staple at the 3 open range zoos!!!
 
I read in a magazine that private owners can keep mandarin ducks but the only problem is that they cost 6 grand
 
ha, in NZ mandarin ducks are pretty common. Don't know how much they cost but it wouldn't be anywhere near six grand
 
pat - there are only a very few exotic birds in australian zoos that cannot be kept privately without a license. the exceptions would be the elderly leftovers and prodigy of past zoo imports such as andean condors, victoria ground pigeons rhea and curassows.

i'm pretty sure mandarins a bit cheaper than that now.

Yes you can keep manadrin ducks, i think i Paid $400 a pair for mine, and they are down to $250 a pair now. just a bit less than 6 grand.:p

one day, one day, i'll have a place big enough to build an aviary on.
when that day comes i'll be calling you for mandarin ducks.

do you know how much the ruddy shelducks are worth? they are damn nice birds.
 
National Primate Colonies

Perth University apprantly have Common Marmosets, Crab eating macaques, pig tail macaques and baboons?????? can anyone tell me more and i think melbourne also have some??? is there any more research animals in oz and any numbers??? cheers
 
ooooooh!!! nice. i want some.

can you get carolina wood ducks (i think thats the name) in australia? i think you can in NZ. they are ornamental birds, not unlike the mandarins.

god forbid if i ever have a farm..........
