just wondering, how large is the land south of the bristol zoo. in the future, is it possible for them to purchase the land for a expansion plan for the zoo after the NWCP? how much would it cost?

prehaps a london zoo type underground tunnel to lead from the zoo to the site

i know this is nothing official, just wanted to check this thing out with you guys first

There's probably no way it could be expanded, and I don't think they would do anyway as the management seem happy with their lot and they're not really tied with many listed buildings as London is.

Look at the aerial map in our Maps Section and you will see the way the site is surrounded. Many of the buildings are part of Clifton College. There is no way that they could expand the Zoo.

The only open land is to the north, the famous Downs. Historically there has been occassional debate on whether the Zoo could annex a small portion adjacent to the Zoo but it has never happened and no doubt it never will.

The Hollywood Towers estate at Cribbs Causeway- site of the planned new Conservation Park venture, was purchased in the 1960's in recognition of the fact the zoo could never extend on its existing site.

This thread is confusing, I think we all came to the conclusion that Bristol zoo can't be expanded though...

No the threads fine its just that Cat-man expects us to be able to read his mind when what he`s typed doesn`t match what he`s thinking.

zoogiraffe, I've noticed you're constant rudeness to most of catman's posts, and it's really starting to frustrate me. Yes, he's only young, but we should be encouraging him and using helpful advice rather than being downright rude and sarcastic.

Sorry if you don`t like it but you get what you see with me and i say what i think except i normally put it down in a manor that can be understood by everyone on here, and that`s inspite of been extremely word dyslexic, also Cat-mens not the only one i`ve had ago at for posting daft comments on here so he`s not getting any special treatment as far as i`m concerned, finally if i post something stupid on here fell free to pull me up!!

Lets not argue about stupid things, their no need for sly comments and theirs no need for swearing whatever age you are.

And Bristol will no expand as it has no place to expend to apart from the downs witch is a historic part of bristol history.

Bumping this thread as I have a question and this seems the most appropriate place to ask…

I am re-reading “Animal Gardens” by Emily Hahn and she writes of Bristol:

Though the area is soon to be immensely enlarged it should be remembered that Bristol has won its reputation in cramped conditions.

Does anyone have any idea about what this expansion was and why it didn’t happen? I wonder if she was mixing up the Hollywood estate acquired in the 60s.
