Extinct species you have seen

I have seen schmiter horned oryx, northern white rhinos, pere davides deer, guam rails, and several others i cannot remember at the moment. btw i saw these at the San diego zoo and the safari park here.

I'll never know, but my mother probably made her first visit to London Zoo as a child of seven (or maybe younger) with my grandmother, aunt and uncle.

They used to go to the Canal Banks to eat their picnic, in which case I suppose that a detour to the North Bank might have taken them past London's last Thylacine....

I worked it out once that my father had narrowly missed seeing the thylacine there.

On the subject though, there is apparently someone here who has a photo of this animal taken by his grandmother in law(?) there was talk of it being shown here but I can't recall where.

BTW I also may have seen the Javan tiger at Tilburg Zoo ( the Netherlands ) in the late 1960-ties but was at that time to young to remember it now........

Eh, I'm not that old so there hasn't been much time for the animals I've seen to go extinct, at least in the wild. I've almost certainly seen some amphibians that fit the bill. I might've seen a scimitar horned oryx when I was younger but I can't remember so well.

Hope it's alright to poke at a long-dead thread...

I've been lucky enough to see both Scimitar-horned oryx (all-female herd of 6) and Père David's deer (buck and doe, both have since passed away) at the Greater Vancouver Zoo here in B.C., and Socorro doves at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C..

I've also seen several northern spotted owls during a private tour of the Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program (also here in B.C.), and while the subspecies as a whole is endangered, they are practically extinct in Canada.

Have seen Scimitar-Horned Oryx [Marwell, Berlin..] and Przewalski's Horse [Berlin Tierpark, Welsh Mountain, Whipsnade] several times over at this point - though I don't have distinct memory of seeing Soccoro Dove - though seeing zoos it is held at I may well have seen it before.

Pere David's deer, Scimitar-horned oryx, Spix's macaw, Socorro dove, Kihansi spray toad, Charco La Palma pupfish and Partula nodosa are the only extinct in the wild species I've seen in zoos. I've also seen cultivated plants extinct in the wild: Brugmansia arborea, Brugmansia suaveolens, Brugmansia versicolor, Franklinia alatamaha, Lysimachia minoricensis, Sophora toromiro. But I never saw alive a now extinct species.

There is another thread dealing with this topic; I have seen Lonesome George (probably now extinct Island population of Galapagos Tortoise) in Captivity and Slender-billed Curlew (still not listed as Extinct despite no confirmed sightings for 2 decades) wild in Morocco.

I've seen scimitar-horned oryx many times when Chester used to hold them and I feel like I have also seen them elsewhere. Don't think I have seen Pere David's deer yet actually! I've also seen Socorro dove at Chester and a variety of Partula species at both Bristol and London. Also seen butterfly goodeid many times while it was still listed as EW.

You saw Lonesome George ?!

The animals that I can recall at the moment:
  • Scimitar horned oryx
  • Pere David's deer
  • Prezwalksi's Horse (when it was extinct in the wild still)
  • Guam rail (when it was extinct in the wild still)
  • Northern white rhinoceros
  • Bali myna (mot extinct in the wild, but nearly so)
  • Panama golden frog
I narrowly missed seeing Socorro Island Dove as they were not on display in Albuquerque BioPark due to bird flue. I also missed Sumatran Rhino (while not extinct in the wild, very likely could be soon) due to personal negligence of not getting to Cincinnati when I could have.

Panamanian golden frog is not extinct in the wild, just critically endangered. I also didn't counted Przewalski's horse in my previous list because I didn't knew it has been extinct in the wild, for sure I must have seen it in the epoch where it was considered EW, due to how common they are in zoos.

IUCN lists it as "Possibly Extinct in the Wild" and it's believed to be by those studying it.

Indeed. Mind you, I rate the Curlew sighting more; I saw the last two males known on their winter grounds.

When you saw them, were you aware that you were seeing what are likely the last, and that you'd be one of the last people to see the species alive? That must be a heartbreaking feeling.

I've seen a few captive species that are extinct in the wild, but I've yet to experience the total extinction of a species I've seen in person. I hope to never experience that, but just in case, I try not to take any wildlife for granted, no matter how common.
