extreme-macro/focus-stacking with Rothschildia lebeau larva

used the post focus functionality of the lumix GH4 to vary the focal plane and grab a couple hundred 4k frames per photograph of this larva and then stitched the in-focus parts together with helicon focus software. why bother? well, with extreme macro photography, you get almost no depth of field...using focus stacking techniques you can get as much depth of field as you want.

i'd love to meet other focus stackers in here and see their work.

i also use a nikon d7500 with a variety of optics (including reverse mounted enlarger lenses, etc) and a focus stacking motorized rail. the trick is diffusing the flash (or continuous lighting) enough to avoid hot spots and glare.

the adult moth is beautiful. like all saturnidae, it has no mouth and only lives about a week after emerging from the cocoon.
