Toronto Zoo Family Trees of Toronto Zoo Animals

Canadian Lynx

Toronto's first lynx were a pair they got in 1973. An elderly male joined them the following year. Another male arrived in 1980. He was joined the following year by a mate and they produced the first kittens in 1988. After their passing in 2003 a sibling set was brought in and a male joined them in 2009 but he was dead within 4 months. Then they are replaced with Ember and her brother Opi who is swapped out for Ryan. They produced 4 kittens before Ember was replaced with Tilbury who produced 1 kitten. The zoo was successful in rearing kittens going 7 for 10.

Demoiselle Crane

A very early arrival to the zoo was the demoiselle cranes who arrived in 1972. The zoo picked up 4 females from Zurich. One of which was with us until 2011! I honestly thought they were gone much longer than that. She died within days of her mate. A massive group of 21 (2.1.18) arrived in 1973 from Belgium. In a sickening twist of fate 18 of those cranes were dead within weeks. While they had 7 healthy birds, in 1974 they went right back to importing more with another another 10 from (0.4.6) England and in an unsettling trend 6 of them die within 6 months. But that wasnt the only group that year. Another colossal group of 43 (3.7.33) arrived from the Netherlands and 22 more were dead in less than a year and another 12 were dead within 2 years. But wait we still aren’t done getting more birds that year as a male arrived from Mich-Ken Breeding Farms. All of these birds were at least a year old by the time they arrive if not older so they are established. They die at a variety of times so its not like there is a cull either. Just so we are all on the same page within 2 years the zoo got 79 cranes but even crazier then the number they imported was the fact that within 2 years of opening 58 of them were dead!!! Crazy!!! And not one chick was born yet to contribute to those terrible numbers. Thankfully they just lived with whatever was still alive (minus a small group that was transferred out) until 1995 when they brought in a new male from Elmvale Jungle Zoo. I say that because at least they weren’t bringing in more cranes to kill. And the numbers by the way continue to fall during that period of time.

It was after his arrival that breeding finally started. In 1998 a successful clutch of 2 hatched. After that was a sting of 7 failures from 1999-2004 with just one surviving male in 2000.

So for all the death in this species at the zoo they got just 3 chick. Maybe the zoo should have just given up on this species after the first group from Belgium was decimated. I think the writing was definitely on the wall after the group from England and it said this isn’t going to go well just give up. I also cannot understand why the zoo imported so many. Once you had a few pairs that should have been good enough.

Grey Crowned Crane

In a shocking turn of events I cant get any info on the cranes other than Huck who was born at the zoo. I know we have had the species for quite some time and there have been chicks. This one was disappointing because I think there is very likely a good history here I just can’t find.

Red-legged Seriema

The first pair of seriema arrived in 1982 and without a chick both passed away by 1990. In 2004 we got another female who left in 2018. She got a mate in 2008 but he passed in 2012 again without a chick. Our current female arrived in 2018.

Grey-winged Trumpeter

Added to the zoo in 1988 were a pair of females. A male didn't join them until 2001 when one female left for Sedgwick County Zoo. Another pair was added in 2006.

Two years later the zoo had a hatchling that lived just a month and was followed by another unsuccessful clutch of 2. The first surviving clutch of 4 (2.2) hatched in 2009 and the last surviving chick arrived in 2010.

The species was gone by 2012.

Crested Wood Partridge

Unfortunately there is not good information on this one. All I can say is we currently have 12 (4.6.2). Im positive we have had far more than that. 2 of the 2020 chicks died somewhat recently.

Palawan Peacock Pheasant

In 2012 the zoo decided to get the peacock pheasants and was able to pick up a group of 3 (2.1) but one male had an unfortunate short life at the zoo. Unless I have my memory confused with the fire backed pheasants, which is possible, and he escaped the aviary into the orang space and was loved a little too rightly by Budi or Kembali. Sadly there cant be any breeding because the female has unknown parents.

Cabot’s Tragopan

In a real lucky turn of events the zoo was given 6 Cabot’s tragopan by a private breeder in 2016. When there are just 35 within the AZA currently it goes to show how lucky the zoo was to be allowed to have 6. The last 5 years have not been kind to the zoo with a group that provided such amazing promise. One female quickly passed. In 2018 there was a massacre in the aviary thanks to a raccoon and 2 males were among the many dead. In the last 2 years another female and male, KFed have also died. We could have bred all 6 in any combination as they were all from different parents. A spoiled opportunity thanks to horrible luck.

Great Argus

An early arrival in 1973 was the great argus with a group of 5 (1.4). In 1974 they added 3 more females.

It wasn’t until 1975 when the first chick arrived but didnt live. In 1977 they got the first surviving chick but her clutchmate didnt survive. 8 more were born in 1979 and 1981 of which 5 survive.

In 1986 losses in the adult flock were replaced with a new pair who ultimately don’t produce another chick.

The last one was transferred out in 1998.

Grey-capped Emerald Dove

The first grey-capped emerald doves were a group of 7 (2.3.2) that arrived in 2008. That entire group had passed away by 2014, with most of them in 2014 itself.

In 2010 the first clutch of 2 females was successfully hatched and reared. They were followed in 2011 by their younger siblings, a male and a female.

Two additional females were brought in to breed with the male. I don’t remember any word of chicks but then again its not a species whose chicks would get much attention.

Jambu Fruit Dove

This was a species briefly kept. A pair was first acquired in 1993. When the male passed in 1995 he was quickly replaced. Sadly by 1998 all three had passed and the species was gone.

Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove

1985 saw the first bleeding heart doves arrive with a single pair. They quickly began producing clutches in 1986. Though they had 5 clutches that year resulting in 6 chicks of which just two females survive. They would go on to produce 17 more chicks between 1987 and 1990. Another 8 survive but of those quite a few dont make their second birthday. None of them ever leave the zoo. By 1993 the flock had died out.

A new pair arrived in 2014. They quickly produced 4 chicks in 2 different clutches in 2015. They were good parents and all of their chicks fledged. One did die at six months old but thats hardly their fault. Unfortunately the male was killed, I think by a rat, in late 2015. A clearly inbred chick hatched in 2016 but it didn’t survive. A new male arrived in 2017. I’m not as sure about any chicks after that other than the 2020 chick we learned about on Facebook Live last spring. It’s possible they had more because the pair is genetically valuable.

Green-naped Pheasant Pigeon

A more recent arrival, the first female arrived in 2010 and was joined in 2011 by the male. Their only chick, a female, hatched in 2012. The male passed soon after the hatching. In 2014 a new male arrived and in 2016 a male chick died but was quickly followed by a female chick who thrived, another 2 in 2017 and a male in 2018.

Nicobar Pigeon

The Nicobar pigeon is one of the original bird species at the zoo, first arriving in 1972 from Zurich in the form of 3 males. A pair joined them in 1973. Another 7 (5.2) arrived in 1974.

Male, Steve Wonder, was one of the last animals of 1974 to pass when he died in 2013 at 49 years old. He had been there since in 1972.

In 1975 the first chick was hatched. In total 58 chicks have hatched of which just 8 did not survive.

Just 3 of the current flock of roughly 29 were born outside of the zoo. Unfortunately since none of the parentage is known it only the 3 males could be bred to females but even then their parents are not known. They could all be inbred. It could prevent future breeding potentially so if the zoo would like to breed and participate in the SSP they would need to do some genetic testing.

Victoria Crowned Pigeon

Australasia got its first Victoria crowned pigeon in 1982 with the arrival of its first pair.

In 1986 breeding kicked off with a failed chick. It was quickly followed by its younger brother who did reach adulthood that year, a female in 1987 and a male (the late great Crash) in 1988. 1989 was unsuccessful but they were back to a healthy female chick in 1990. The following year saw two more dead chicks. 1992-1993 saw 3 more chick live (1.2) which was following in 1994 with 3 more deaths and one female and 2 more healthy chicks in 1995 and 1996.

In 2006 a female was brought in for Crash but they were just good friends for 5 years before she passed. The current group arrived after Crash’s passing in 2013 with unsuccessful chicks in 2014 and 2015.

Success was clearly varied with the zoo getting 20 chicks but only 11 make it.

Egyptian Fruit Bats

I can’t be as detailed about this group as the others but it is note worthy that Toronto imported the first Egyptian fruit bats from Europe in 1972. The following year saw the first of many births and the zoo had a robust program until 2016 or 2017 when the last 34 were transferred out.

Straw Coloured Fruit Bats

Unlike the long history the Egyptians had with the zoo the straw coloured fruit bats have been a more recent addition arriving in 1996. A group of 5 (2.3) arrived from Milwaukee and formed the foundation of the colony. After that all other fruit bats descended from them virtually guaranteeing they are all inbred but to be fair the Milwaukee group could have been inbred too. Parentage is seldom records even for the mother. Forget figuring out who the father is. In 1997 the first three infants were born. Only one lived. A total of 39 were born and 14 have died. Probably a mix of inbreeding and poor maternal care since they dont even know who most of those mothers are.

The current group sits at approximately 20 (9.11) with only 2 elderly females not being born at the zoo. All intact males are kept separate from the colony to prevent more breeding at this time. A good decision unless they do DNA analysis on the colony to figure out how bad the inbreeding is and bring in fresh males if its even wise to breed any females.

Indian Flying Fox

Arriving in July 1974 a flying fox pair joined the zoo but they stuck around less than a year. In September of 1974 a full colony shows up consisting of 23 (12.6.5).

The first birth was in 1975 and after her successful birth things took off with 81 (28.32.21) more babies of which 36 did pass away.

Chimpanzee

The zoo did import 3 wild born chimps in 1976 but in less then a year they realized it wasn't going to work to have chimps and gorillas and stuck with their 7 young gorillas instead. A year later they had left for Spain. The girls were Sudi, Njugunyasa and Kijidudu.

Ok I was scrounging today and I might be able to do a giant panda family tree. I dont know how accurate or full it would be. I'd be building it off of a website I'm not familiar with the legitimacy of the info. Do you guys want it even if its not right or would you rather I skip it? I am going to try to see what I can find to confirm some of the details but I am not as confident in it as everything else I have scrounged up to date. Let me know. I will take silence as a no from everyone.

That's all I need then. One person is enough, lol. Depends how expansive the first 2 pandas lines are as to how long it will take me. Not like I don't already have the most recent batch covered. Neither of them could possibly have cubs yet for 2021. But that could very well change come mid summer through fall. Breeding all 4 is possible given that the twins are turning 6 this year. Wow where has the time gone?

Tomistoma

Toronto has had a fairly long history with Tomistomas. The first pair arrived as juveniles in 1988 from the Bronx (but different clutches). The male died in 1993 while the female moved to St. Augustine in 2008 when she was swapped out for the current male Fernando who was a sub adult better suited for the exhibit’s size.

Painted Terrapin

The zoo kick started their painted terrapin program in 1990 when they imported 11 (3.8) from Indonesia. 6 of them are still alive today. Another female was brought in from Detroit in 2011.

The first hatching happened in 2002 with 6 hatchlings of which only 2 were not strong enough to make it. 5 more hatched in 2003. 2005 was unfortunate because only a single hatchling was born and it didnt make it. While 2007 only saw one hatchling that one made it. The zoo had a bad spell between 2009 and 2010 when 13 were born but only 4 survived. To break out of the slump 2 new males were brought in in 2011. 2012 it was back to success with 2 hatchlings. In an impressive year in 2014 9 of 10 hatchlings made it and were born to 3 females and at least 2 males. They followed that up in 2016 with 4 more successful hatchlings. 2018 they were 1 for 2. Then in 2020 5 of 7 were successful.

In total the zoo has as of 2020 had 51 eggs make it to hatching and 35 of those making it those first critical days. That record may sound poor but the first hatching anywhere in North America didnt happen until 1988 and it wasn’t until the 2000’s before breeding started to get consistent anywhere. Naturally it would take the zoo a little bit of experimentation to figure out the best way to support hatchlings for this species. There wasn’t a ton of info to go on. To put them in perspective 16 of the 75ish painted terrapins in North America are descended from Toronto’s group and a further 6 are those parents (the 3 brought in aside from the original group have all moved on). The only one close to that is Fort Worth with 12 living offspring.

Brown Forest Tortoise

The zoo made its first attempt to house brown forest tortoises in 1976. It did not end well. They had both passed within 8 months. They were imports from Asia.

In 1980 they took in a female from an unknown source and while she survived 19 months she also died.

They tried again in 2007 when the current trio became available for adoption after a confiscation.

Burmese Star Tortoise

In 2007 the zoo brought in their first 4 (3.1) Burmese star tortoises. While one male has died the rest of the group is thriving. In 2014 they had their first hatchling Johnny B and he was followed in 2016 by a second hatchling who didnt make it and in 2017 by a third who has been thriving.

Home’s Hingeback Tortoise

1994 saw the arrival of 4 (2.2) Home’s hingeback tortoises who were wild born imports. They did arrive via another zoo though. Sadly the females didnt survive a month. Two more males were added in 1997. They added a male and female in 2001. After a few deaths and transfers another male arrived in 2006 but more importantly the zoo’s first 4 hatchlings arrived. A single unsuccessful hatching followed in 2007 and then they took a break. In 2014 and 2015 7 more hatchlings arrived but only 4 made it. Unfortunately in 2017 the zoo transferred out the entire group.

Madagascar Flat-tailed Tortoise

The zoo bought a group of 3 (1.2) Madagascar flat-tailed tortoise from a private breeder in 2006. They had 2 hatchlings in 2011 and all 5 were sent to Singapore in 2016.

Madagascar Spider Tortoise

Another addition to the reptile collection was 3 (1.2) spider tortoises in 2006 from a private breeder. One of the females left in 2015 and another male was added in 2016. The first hatchling arrived in 2020 and two more joined it in 2021.

Ok after two days with google and an eventual acceptance I cannot be perfect with this one I now present giant pandas. This is an amalgamation of google searches. Don't count it as fact. Don't assume I got everyone. I'm certain more of them have bred then I could find. But if anyone wants to take up the challenge and do better here's a base to work from and good luck. I probably would do better if I read Chinese.

Giant Panda

For those who aren't familiar with out panda history we have played host to pandas twice. In 1985 we welcomed Qing Qing and Quan Quan for a very fast 100 day stay. Then the visit most are probably aware of we had them again from 2013 to 2018, during which time we welcomed the first pandas born on Canadian soil.

I was completely shocked to learn our two visits share a familial connection. Qing Qing was the great great grandmother of not just Er Shun but Da Mao who is her cousin. Probably why the zoo never advertised this unique connection. Little icky we got a breeding pair who are cousins. Also the most likely reason why when it was time to breed Er Shun they had frozen samples send from several Chinese pandas to mix with Da Mao's fresh stuff. I now sincerely hope he's not the father. But for Er Shun 3 generations of her family have lived at the zoo which would have been cool to market if Da Mao hadn't been her partner. Zoo Atlanta's Yang Yang is also their uncle.

Radiated Tortoises

In 2006 they picked up the zoo’s current 4 (2.2) tortoises from a public donation. Give how common they are in the pet trade and zoos kinda surprising we didnt have them sooner.

Black-breasted Leaf Turtle

In 1991 the first group of 8 (2.6) black-breasted leaf turtles arrives. Unfortunately this doesn’t go well only 1.2 survive the first few months. They were wild born animals so that could have played a factor. The next year the zoo tried again with 8 (4.4) more wild born animals from the same source, of which 2.1 survive the year. For the survivors they do live long lives and start passing away around 2015.

The first hatchling arrived in 1996 and she only made it 10 months. 6 hatch in 1998. Unfortunately just one survives and is still at the zoo (unless she died recently). Between 2002 and 2007 21 (8.6.7) hatchlings arrived of which only 5 failed to thrive. In 2012 another hatchling was successful. To add genetic diversity 8 new females arrived in 2016 as well as 2 new hatchlings.

Blanding’s Turtle

It was the early days when the zoo decided to house their favorite local turtle species. They were there from the start with a group of 7. The first 3 hatchlings arrived in 1979 beginning the long tradition of breeding and release at the zoo. Numbers were not high to start with and none were released but that changed when the focus of the program became conservation. I cant tell you how many have been born at the zoo but the number is high.

Flower-back Box Turtle

In 1991 the zoo imported 8 (3.4.1) wild born turtles who didnt fare too well. 4 died just after arrival.

The first hatchling was a male named Franklin in 2003. A few days later he was joined by his baby brother Henry. Both live at the zoo until Franklin’s death in 2014 and Henry’s transfer to - Miller Park Zoo in 2017.

Another female arrived in 2017 but she was gone by 2018. She was also the zoos last one.

Spiny Turtle

The zoo added spiny turtles to the collection in 1992 when it acquired 2 pairs spiny turtles. 2 more males were added in 1993. In 1994 they all left for Philly for the next 10 years before returning home in 2004. One male has died.

Wood Turtle

The zoo picked up its first wood turtle in 1977 and she lived at the zoo until her passing in 1996. She was joined in 1982 by a second female who passed in 1993.

Panamanian Golden Frog (Atelopus varius)

The first frog group arrived between 2005 and 2006 and consisted of 25 frogs. I cannot account for their offspring.

Panamanian Golden Frog (Atelopus zeteki)

I’d like to account for this species in any way but I cant. No idea when they arrived but at least 2012. They have been very successful in recent years producing at least 47 adult frogs.

Puerto Rican Crested Toad

I cant find numbers on adults but the species has lived at the zoo since 1984. However the breeding program has been exceptionally successful producing over 157 000 tadpoles for reintroduction to the wild by the end of 2019. That total does not include the tadpoles kept back to raise up for breeding stock at the zoo and other zoos and groups participating in the recovery program.

Wyoming Toad

This is another harder one to trace. The earliest I can see them arriving is 2016 but I don’t think thats right and it looks like they were all transferred out to Detroit the following year.

Masked Lapwing

After Jardin Zoologique du Quebec closed in 2007 the zoo took in a male masked lapwing. He passed in 2010 and that’s it for the species.

Spur Winged Lapwing

While the masked lapwing is a short story the spur winged lapwing is a very different one. The first pair arrived in December of 1978 from Winnipeg. They were brother and sister so good thing they didn't breed. The male died the following year. A new male arrived from Reid Park in 1982.

The first chick was a female who hatched in 1983. She stayed on throughout her life. Her mother passed at the end of the year and her father a few years later but thankfully no inbreeding.

1988 a sibling set of 4 arrives (1.3) from the Bronx. The female chick died in 1989 and a new mate for the male was brought in from Montreal in 1991. Unfortunately he preferred breeding with one of his sisters and produced 5 clutches resulting in 11 of 51 chicks surviving (2.7.42).

The species died out at the zoo in 2004.

West Indian Whistling Duck

The first ducks arrive a month before opening and consists of a flock of 4 (2.2). Just after opening their numbers are bolstered by 2 more females.

The first and only hatching happened in 1978. The chick survived just 2 days.

Weirdly November of 1978 saw the entire flock wiped out. Two had died the year before but 4 deaths within days seems a lot. They were never replaced.

Swan Goose

Arriving a month after opening day a flock of 3 (1.1.1) arrived from 2 different locations. The unknown gender died in 1975. It was followed by the female in 1980 and male in 1984.

Their first chick was a female who hatched in 1978. Unfortunately she was it. She was transferred in 1979.

Trumpeter Swan

This is a species that comes as a surprise to most as being actually part of the zoo. Yes the zoo currently does own 2 trumpeter swans they allow to free range. They are allowed to breed and their young can be free once they are grown.

Officially the zoo welcomed their first swan, a female from Jardin Zoologique du Quebec, in 2006. She was an older bird and died in 2009.

Her replacements were a female from Winnipeg and a wild born male in 2011. Their first clutch in 2013 was unsuccessful when the sole cygnet died at 2 months old. I assume they have successfully reared other cygnets since then. I just can't find pfficial records of it.

In 2015 the zoo was part of 3 wild born cygnet who were released. One was recaptured and released twice more in 2016 but that cygnet didnt make it.

The zoo has been a release site for immature swans since the 1989 restoration projects began. They say that since then over 60 cygnets have been raised to maturity at the zoo from the zoo's and wild pairs.

Marbled Teal

Arriving with the West Indian Whistling Ducks was a flock of 6 (2.4) marbled teal. They were down to a single pair by 1977 but despite the losses the pair produced a clutch of 3 (1.2) in 1978. Overtime they or their offspring produced 6 (4.2) surviving ducklings of 17 (4.2.11) hatched. The last one died in 1997.

Dhole

I don't know if this is a full history of the dhole Toronto had but I was scrounging around and did fine some degree of information that has allowed me to do a bit of a tree. Maybe its a full one I'm not sure. I do trust the info I gathered. I just wasn't able to get all the little details I usually do and individuals could be missing.

The zoo had dhole from 1995 to 2017.

As far as I can tell we had 4 different adults who produced 4 puppies in 2 litters. They have since gone on to be super prolific and I think almost all dholes in North America are now related to them. Possibly all these days.

Nubian Ibex

1976 saw the arrival of a herd of ibex which consisted of 8 (2.6). By 1977 they welcomed their first kid. After the little female more would follow. 86 (46.38.2) kids were born however 42 of them died. I'm pretty sure they were culling offspring once they were no longer cute as a very odd number died in the fall or just before their first birthday. A really high number and mostly male calves but some females too.

A new female was added in 1984 from LA.

Sable Antelope

The sables were with the zoo since its early days with the first group of 6 (2.4) arriving in 1976. They came from Germany.

Their arrival was quickly followed by the first birth in 1977 and although that little male didnt make it others did. The zoo had 47 (26.20.1) calves and 11 died.

A new infusion of genetics came in 1986 with a new bull from Washington. He in turn was replaced by Puff Daddy in 2004 who came from Omaha.

In the female line the bloodline went 5 generations deep. It is a pity the one female calf born to Puff Daddy and Savanna didnt survive to serve as the base of the next generation herd or that they didnt bring one of the boys back from Parc Safari. Now just one male remains that has history that deep with the zoo. There likely aren't any descendants left other than Doug and Savanna.

They transferred out Puff Daddy and Savanna in 2017 to make room for the eland.

Black Duiker

We had the species for a brief spell. Two males arrived in 2010. One died in 2012 while the other one left for LA in 2013. See brief.

Common Waterbuck

Just days before opening the first and only male arrived from the UK. He stayed around for 6 years before heading to Edmonton without any other waterbucks around for company.

Thomson’s Gazelle

In 1998 the gazelles arrived for the opening of the savanna with a single pair. They had a calf in 1999 but she only survived 2 months. A second successful calf was born the following March and a little sister followed by the end of the year. The whole family returned to Mountainview Breeding and Conservation Centre in 2001. I have no idea why their stay was so short. Pity they couldnt have stayed and a herd be built.

Gemsbok

The first herd members (1.1) arrived in 1973 from Zurich. In 1976 3 females joined them from Germany.

Before their herd mates arrive though the first pair had a male calf in 1977 who lived. He was followed at the end of the year by a sister. Once the herd expanded breeding continued. In total 30 (19.10.1) calves were born and just 7 didnt live.

A second breeding male arrived in 1987 from Buffalo to breed with some of the female calves.

In 1996 our last three females were transferred to Saskatoon ending the program.

Impala

They arrived in 1998 for the opening of the savanna and had a small herd of 4 (1.3). Unfortunately the male died soon after arrival and for some reason the zoo didnt try to replace him. The last one died in 2011.

Lowland Nyala

Another great species around for opening day. The zoo imported a pair in May of 1974 from France but sadly both were dead in less than a year along with the female’s female calf born in June. They were never replaced.

Springbok

The herd of 4 (2.2) arrived in 1973 from Hamburg. Unfortunately both a male and female made it just 2 months. More genetics were brought in from 2 Seattle born females in 1985.

The first calf was a male who survived just 2 days in 1976. It would take 3 years and 4 calves before there was a survivor. In total 14 calves were born and 5 of them died.

The last two were transferred out in 1994.

Barasingha
The first ones arrived in 1971 well in advance of opening. Various others are added a little prior to opening and then again over time. It wasn’t a huge herd of adults.

A disturbing trend appears when it comes to breeding. Everything sounds great when I tell you they had 44 fawns. The zoo was cranking out several a year. However their 2 year survival rate is horrific. Only 7 make it past 2 years, the vast majority dying within days. It's a mix of male and female deaths so it’s not like it was a gender based cull. It has to be one of the worst survival rates at the zoo. The vast majority were sired by the same bull but others occasionally were the sire. There is a chance there was some level of inbreeding at play since some females came from the same source as the sire. He definitely did have some offspring with daughters. It would take me awhile to sort it all out but not all of the fawns would have been inbred. Some yes but not all.

By 1993 the last of the barasingha are shipped out.

Reeve’s Muntjac

Now I could do this one with some names but the zoo was very prolific and I cannot get an overwhelming majority of names. It would be rather pointless to go all in on trees when 95% of them would be nameless. However I will provide every name I do find in a list in chronological order at the end of the species review.

The first muntjac was male Munchie who arrived in 1972. In 1973 he was joined by the rest of the initial herd which consisted of 5.7. They came from a variety of sources but 5 did come from Winnipeg. Other genetics would be brought in later with new males in 1980 and 1985.

It didnt take them long to breed and the first fawn arrived before the zoo even opened in January of 1974. It wasnt a long lived animal dying by September but it was the first of many. Over the years 211 fawns were born (116. 79. 16). Unfortunately I don’t think the zoo believed in any intervention with them and may even have culled what they couldnt send away because 93 of them die in their first year, many in their first month. But it could also have been severe inbreeding. While there was the genetics of 7 males and 14 different females available the zoo never took note of who sired who and rarely even who was the mother. With no new genetic lines since 1985, many males and females being retained for breeding and continued breeding through the early 2000’s it seems very likely that inbreeding was happening.

Not sure when the last one died but the group was down to a single elderly individual when the other last two were transferred out in 2008.

I do have the names of some of them. Because so few have names I didn't grab the info on each one. I will provide the list of names I have. If anyone wants the info I can get on these ones let me know and I can do more.

Caribbean Flamingo

Unfortunately I cannot provide the info on all of the flamingos the zoo has had. The first Caribbean flamingos arrived at the zoo in 1977 with a group of at least 5 (3.2) from Mich-Ken Breeding Farms. That original group is still part of the flock today. A second group of wild born flamingos arrived from INTERZOO in 1989, 7 (2.5). The current group also boasts 5 (4.1) offspring born at the zoo largely without parents documented. The female was born in 1983. Three boys were born in 2007 and the last in 2008. I wish I could tell you more about the others. I’d like to know how successful the zoo had been at breeding. Little weird that breeding has all but stopped in a group with 7 founders when they had a good 2007 and 2008 season. Leaves me with so many questions.

Greater Flamingo

The first flock arrived in March of 1974 and consisted of 8 birds (3.4.1). They were all wild born and roughly a year old at the time of arrival. A second group of 5 (0.4.1) arrived in 1982 from the wild as young chicks less than a year old. It wasn’t until 1993 when the first chick was hatched followed by a second in 1994. That was it but both chicks survived. In June of 2000 they were all sent to Mountain View Conservation and Breeding Centre.

Great White Pelican

For the opening of the revamped savanna the zoo brought in a flock of 4 (2.2) wild born 2 year old pelicans. Sadly by 2003 all but one was dead. The last male was transferred out but he too was dead within a year.

In 2011 the zoo decided to bring back pelicans for the penguin exhibit and picked up Sheldon from San Diego Safari Park and then changed their minds in 2014 when the penguin colony had begun to really grow. He’s currently at Fort Wayne for those interested. He potentially sired one chick while still in San Diego.

Pink Backed Pelican

The zoo picked up the pelicans in 2011 and 2012 from San Diego Safari Park and Disney respectively. San Diego’s group was 3.0 (Larry, Curly and Moe) while Disney sent 1.3 (Schemp, Belle, Ariel, Cinderella). Like with the white pelican the zoo lacked space and by 2015 they left for Fresno where they have yet to breed and 2 males and a female are dead.

Sacred Ibis

The first flock arrived in 1973 to settle in before opening and consisted of 7 (2.3.2) from Hamburg. It was a mix of wild and captive born. They were joined in 1974 by a group from Basel consisting of 6 (2.2.2) more captive born birds. By 1978 the flock started reproducing and 8 chicks were born that year. Sadly only one survived more than a few days. It was a young inexperienced flock though so that kind of makes sense. In late 1978 the flock grew by 3 (1.2) more birds. They were wild born but spent 2 years at Buffalo Zoo first. Of this flock they were pretty long lived. One died in 1991 (about average) but the other two died in 2006 and 2013. The longest lived one is tied with a living bird for the oldest female. 1979 with a little experience under their belts the flock successfully raised 7 of 8 chicks born.

The majority of the current flock was born at the zoo with two of the breeding males coming from Jardin Zoologique du Quebec when it closed though we initially picked up the a flock of 10 (2.3.5). Those who aren’t here today either passed or were transferred out.

Over time the zoo has hatched 111 chicks with 70 surviving past the first year and survival rates improving over time.

African Spoonbill

The first group of 7 (2.5) spoonbills arrived in October 1990 as imports from the wild. They did not adapt well and in 1991 the flock was ravaged with just 2 survivors. The zoo persisted and in 1992 they picked up a captive born group of 3 (1.2) from North Carolina. They fared no better than the first group and all were dead by 1993, leaving just the 2 female survivors from the first group. They stuck around until 2006 and 2008.

To establish the flock 3 females arrived in 2015 and male Steve arrived in 2017 to breed with them from Lincoln Park. The births of Reese Witherspoonbill and Rita in 2020 was marked the first successful breeding for the zoo.

Saddle Billed Stork

In 1997 the zoo decided to go for saddle billed storks and imported a pair of 1 year olds from Africa. It didn't go well. The male died within a month and the female was dead in less than 18 months. Shame they are such a pretty species.

White Stork

Arriving a year ahead of opening was a pair of storks from Berlin. They were joined just before opening by a male from Riverdale. In 1978 they brought in a second female from Storybrooke. They were all dead by the end of the 1980’s. In 1988 another white stork was added to the zoo to join the final female from the first group. He hung around until his death in 1993 from old age. He was 30 years old.

Red Billed Hornbill

The zoo served as host to a female red billed hornbill for 4 months between 1999 and 2000. She was returned from where she came and I cant tell you where because I don't know. We must have been holding her as a favor to someone. Probably was never on display.

Von Der Decken’s Hornbill

We had a pair for not all that long. The male, Heinz Klaus, arrived first and he was joined a few years later by female, Francine. They were finally nesting when he was killed by a turaco sharing the aviary in 2017. Francine was then transferred to LA in 2018 where she has since bred.

Blue-crowned Motmot

I cant sort out when the first one arrived but its at least 1979. And at least 15 have lived at the zoo with some breeding. Again I cant tell you how successful that was. I could make assumptions on chick deaths but it wouldn't give a fair picture without the successes so we will just leave it that we have had 15 total. The last one escaped a few years ago.

Blue-bellied Roller

The zoo got a pair of males from Calgary in 2007 and one died in 2015. Short and simple.

Nile Softshell Turtle

All I could find is the zoo has had a pair of males, our beloved Dottie and Garth. Likely bought as a breeding pair until they realized Dottie was a male. Oops. They arrived together in 1994. I have no clue what happened to Garth. They did have them in separate enclosures for awhile but Garth may have been shipped out or died.
