Toronto Zoo Family Trees of Toronto Zoo Animals

Since the index is now back a page I will repost it.

Family Trees

For those finding this thread after the rest of us the family trees are colour coded by generation. The code and explanation of how I tried to organize things begins on the first page. There is a later update for more of a code for more generations as I discovered longer trees.

Histories

The histories were done for species where I couldn't find the names of the individual animals to work out a tree for. What was done instead was a quick look at arrivals of adults, births, deaths of their offspring and a date given for when the species was phased out if it has been. This is the group were there might be the most potential for future family trees.

And for those of you counting we have looked at 208 different species in 74 family trees and 134 histories.

@ProjectGames, as shown above gibbons are one page 2. Its a shorty.

I wondered how you all this information.... especially considered most of them are from the past. I've tried to look up information about the zoo in the past, but it was very difficult finding through google. Did you find old articles in the past... or did you build a relationship with the well-known zoo workers and got the info from them?

@ProjectGames, the answer is through LOTS of research. Some of it I had been collecting for years already. The sources varied depending on the species and ease of finding intel. Essentially I am nuts, had free time (thank you covid) and an incredible need to learn.

Ok after much annoying work I can say some things about the history of lions at the zoo. I have no names which is super frustrating to the person we all know loves names. I will provide info on the lions I can... spoiler alert its a short list.

The zoo’s first lions arrived July 1 1974 and the pride consisted of a ten year old lion and lioness from private hands and they were joined at the end of the month by a male and his 3 sisters from Woodland Park. The siblings were gone by the end of the year. A month later another male arrived and he passed within a year. By September 1974 another set of 3 sisters arrived. One died in less than a year and her sisters were transferred out within 3 years. In 1976 another sibling set, a male and 2 females, arrived from Point Defiance. They all left within a year as well. Another group arrived in 1976 as well consisting of 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Two of the males died within months. Their brother stayed until 1979. Their sisters formed the based of the pride through the 90’s. One lasted until 1992 and the other was here until Jan 1996, eventually being replaced by Nokonda. Even more arrived in 1976 with another sibling set consisting of 5 females and 2 males. One female ended up in Calgary in 1979, another went to a private zoo in 1982, one male left in 1977, 3 sisters were part of the pride until their deaths in 1983, 1993 or 1996, while the last brother was part of the pride until 1993. A single male arrived in 1976 as well but he lived just 3 years. Also that year they took a male and female from Portland but they both were dead within 3 months. The original pair passed on the same day in 1979. Bowmanville sent a female to Toronto in 1997 and 2 years later they sent her right back. In 1994 Rowdy arrived and his origin is a little mysterious. In 1995 white lions Tandi, Kolwa and Kanya, arrived from Philly for the summer as part of the zoos World Series bet. Their baby sister Nokonda arrived in 1996 to join Rowdy after the older original girls rejected him. Finally in 2012 our last shipment of lions arrived featuring males Fintan and Gopa and females Lemon and Makali. Gopa didnt work out and he was sent to Parc Safari and then Jungle Cat World after a few months. Now most of the sibling sets arrived from private places so I’m not 100% certain they are siblings but odds are they are since all seem to have the same birthday.

The first cub was born in March 1976. He died the same day he was born. His parents werent known. The next cub arrived in 1979 and also died the same day. It was born to our male who was with us until 1993… Why do I now think his name might be Brutus or Boris? Ring any bells. The mother was his sister who lived until 1993 as well. The first successful litter was in 1980 to the same pair. They had a female and 3 males. A male and female were sent to another zoo at 3 months old. Their brothers left at 11 months old. There wasnt another litter until 1985 consisting of a male and female. Those cubs stuck around for 3 years before going to private hands. Their mother was from a different shipment of lions than their dad so less likely to be inbred. The 5th litter arrived in 1988 to the sister of the last mother. The 2 females from the litter stayed until 1995. Their one brother died at birth and the other died a few days later. A single male didnt survive his birthday in 1990 and his mom had a second male later that year who also didnt survive past a few days old. She then gave birth again 11 days later… the first must have been a preemie. That brother sister pair survived and went to Parc Safari the next spring. In 1991 the male inbred with his daughter and thankfully the female cub died on her birthday. Inbreeding with a different daughter produced a litter of 3 males and a female that same year. Only one male didnt survive infancy. One brother went to Zoo Sauvage while his brother and sister became the first lions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom when it opened. Back to inbreeding with the first daughter again later that year for a pair of sisters who went the next year to a private zoo. Thus ends the reign of the first pride with a record of 13 for 21 with the majority likely being from a brother sister pairing or a definite father daughter pairing. With the pride replaced Rowdy and Nokonda began their reign. In Jan 1999 they had a single male who didnt survive likely due to neglect. We know Nokonda never took to motherhood. Six months later they had triplet males of which only Simba survived. Males Lyndy and Jerroh were born the following spring and remained at the zoo their whole lives because we couldnt get anyone to take them. Rowdy and Nokonda went 3 for 6 due in large part to Nokonda just not feeling motherhood. Then that brings us to the last litter of cubs, Hank, Harrison, Oliver and Gus, to Fintan and Makali in 2015.

Just went and checked, I know we had a Butch (maybe that's the B name you're thinking of? Brutus sounds familiar though), a Natasha and a Nosey in 1987 thanks to some articles I dug up from a database a few months ago. Couldn't tell you anything else about them though. Oh well, at least we finally have a lion family tree. Now the only big one left is the grizzlies I think?

Butch! I knew there was a B. I think I got him confused with other Bs we had in the past. Brutus was our last capybara breeding male. And I think Boris was our male polar bear before Inuksuk. I could look it up but not gonna. Natasha and Nosey... yes recall those names. While I could do a work up on Butch I couldn't tell you who Natasha and Nosey where in the long list of females. While I can still edit Ill do Butch.

Wish you luck on the grizzlies. Really do. I tried for years to do that one and all I know is we had a female cub born in Toronto supposedly around 2000. Found one article long ago that said something like that and never have been able to find it again.

Yeah they might be the hardest of the bunch if only because no one seems to know when Samson and Shintay arrived, let alone who came before them. At least with the lions we had Rowdy and Fintan's prides locked down, it's their predecessors that gave us trouble. With the grizzlies we don't even know where to start with our currents.
