It was a sad day for all of us at Taronga as we farewelled Bethyl. At 35 years old she was one of the oldest Kodiak Bears in the world, a tribute to the immense dedication of the keepers and vets that looked after her. She’d been experiencing a range of age-related illnesses in recent years, and over the weekend her condition suddenly worsened. It became clear that she was suffering and staff made the incredibly difficult decision to have her humanely put to sleep. She will be sadly missed. Farewell Bethyl, a truly grand old bear!
