I recently visited this zoo for the first time, despite it being not that far away. Now I've been there, I can say I should have visited this place earlier. I was pleasantly surprised (I decided not to check out the zoochat gallery not to be spoiled)
First of all, this little zoo has quite a nice collection, excelling in small mammals. The hightlight are ofcourse the recently arrived Asian brush-tailed porcupines. It was only my second time seeing this species, after Dusit Zoo (Bangkok) in 2012!
I saw all 3 animals active shortly after opening time, as they were being fed. The keepers tried to lure them outside, but they did not seem interested, which is a shame as their outdoor enclosure is really nice. During my rewalk, all 3 porcupines were asleep in their nest box. So those who would like to see these animals, I suggest getting there early!
Faunapark has quite an extensive rodent collection, featuring no less than 8 squirrel species (Eurasian red (no-show), American red, Prevosts, Pallas', Red-flanked variegated, Pegu red (aka Finlaysons), Siberian chipmunk (no-show) and prairie dog). Besides these and the brush-tailed porcupines, there are also Indian porcupines, tree porcupines, copyus, harvest mice, azaras agoutis, Cuban hutias and capibaras
Regarding carnivores, the zoo features coati, Siberian weasel, greater grison (an unfortunate no-show), tayra, corsac fox, silver fox, small-clawed otter, 4 species of mongoose (meerkat, dwarf, banded, yellow) Cape genet, palm civet and no less than 7 species of small cat; European wildcat, serval, jungle cat, caracal, bobcat, ocelot and Geoffroys cat. I saw all of the cats, although the Geoffroys stayed inside. Saharan striped weasels will be a new addition this year (an enclosure is being constructed right now)
Other mammals include wallabies (Bennets and parma), common marmosets, cottontop tamarins, alpacas.
Regarding birds, the collection offers nothing too special, but you can see 6 species of owls (European eagle, snowy, barn, llittle, spectacled, choco) kookaburra, golden pheasant, emerald dove, emu, white stork, greater flamingo, red-legged seriema, blue-and-yellow macaw, red-billed blue magpie (no-show) and hornbills (von der Deckens (no-show), grey-cheeked).
The zoo lacks herps and fishes, but honestly I did not miss them.
The enclosures in this zoo mostly range from average to above average or good, and I could tell a lot of them were quite new. I noticed the entire zoo and all the enclosures were clean and well-maintained, unlike 'Dierenpark de Paay' a zoo of similar size but inferior quality. The marmosets and tamarins had received brand-new enclosures and they were spacious and offered a lot of climbing. The little monkeys can also be seen indoor. Most of the squirrel enclosures were quite spacious, even though the European red had less space than the other species (still acceptable though)
I also liked the cat enclosures. All of them were quite spacious, and bobcat, ocelot, caracal and Geoffroys cat all had double enclosures for seperation purposes. During my visit, only the ocelots were seperated (I saw just the male), while the bobcats (1.1 + 2 older cubs) and Geoffroys cats were kept together. There was just a single caracal left. I did see just one wildcat, but there should be more. Servals were kept as a couple in a single enclosure, as were the jungle cats.
Only two cats can be viewed indoor; the male ocelot and the Geoffroys cat. The latter also received a new enclosure recently. Quite spacious with a lot of climbing, but perhaps too barren/not enough cover for a jungle species.
The tayra enclosure was spacious and offers the animals lots of climbing. The palm civets have less space, but its still adequate. The weasels also have two pretty nice enclosures and I saw both animals really active. The genet enclosure is another double one. I saw one genet eagerly using both parts of the enclosure. The otters have a lot of ground space, but the pool was quite small and shallow. Not bad, far from perfect. Coatis, porcupines, meerkats etc all had pretty good enclosures too.
The only enclosures I did not like were the copyu enclosure and the corsac fox enclosure. Considering the future of the former species in Europe, I don't fault the zoo for not upgrading this enclosure. I do hope that the zoo will give more space to the foxes in the future, as their enclosure was this zoo's sore point in my opinion. The banded mongoose enclosure could also use improvement as it is quite small.
All in all, I really enjoyed this zoo and I ended up spending 3 hours here. I will probably return later this year, when the striped weasels will be on show!
I updated ZTL after my visit today. It should be fairly up-to-date now.
I won't add much photos to the gallery as the zoo is already well presented.
For next week, I am plannig a visit Aqua-Zoo Leerdam, a small aquarium that I have also not yet visited. This will be my 150th zoo/aquarium.
