Faunia Madrid Faunia Madrid

Am i correct, that only one Grey brocket (Mazama gouazoubira) is left at the collection? Does anybody know how old the animal is?

Did something happened to the nancy ma's night monkey? Zootierliste says that the facility doesn't have them anymore.

Hmm... I saw this individual and a couple of others in March this year. If it wasn't Aotus nancymaae, does anyone know which species it is?

It seems strange that they all died. Even more so when the Aotus trivirgatus disappeared and Faunia was left with only Aotus nancymaae individuals.

Through the photo it is very difficult to know what species it is, but I would say that they are Aotus nancymaae individuals and ztl has made an error. Mazama was not listed in ztl for a while either and it was there

Would love to know if there was any sign of the brocket deer!
I saw the brocket deer during my last visit in October-November. She is in the walk through area and she can hide! (so is question of be patient and lucky)

She is alive and well according to a zookeeper I asked, because sadly despite going through her exhibit several times she didn't pop up for me :(
They did remove the specie's sign from the exhibit though, something to take under account.

I returned to Madrid and Valencia's city collections after two years and all the places look well maintained and with some nice improvements. Faunia Sombras Silenciosas complex is the one I want to mention in particular, since not many of this type left on the continent. Without being too overexcited - this is probably the second best Nocturnal House in Europe at the moment.

Species list:

Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat
Moholi Bushbaby
Nancy's Ma Night Monkey/ Striped Skunk
Aardvark
Brush-tailed Bettong/ Moholi Bushbaby
Eastern Quoll
Binturong
Egyptian Fruit Bat

Ground Cuscus
Fahaka Puffer Fish

Ocelot
Crested Porcupine
Brazilian Porcupine/ Moholi Bushbaby
Beech Marten
Hoffmann's Two-toed Sloth
Four-toed hedgehog* - not entirely sure
Electric Eel

I already posted this in the gallery but to keep up with the updated species lists of "Sombras Silenciosas" in the thread, this is what I saw in my visit:
- Northern Luzon giant cloud rat (Phloeomys pallidus)
- Moholi galago (Galago moholi)
- Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni), Nancy Ma’s night monkey (Aotus nancymai) and Striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis)
- Aardvark (Orycteropus afer) and Dwarf mongoose (Helogale parvula)
- Moholi galago (Galago moholi) and Guinea pig (Cavia aperea porcellus)
- Eastern quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus)*
- Binturong (Arctictis binturong)
- Fennec (Vulpes zerda)
- Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) and Seba’s short-tailed bat (Carollia perspicillata)
- New Guinean ground cuscus (Phalanger gymnotis leucippus)
- Glass catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus)
- Fahaka puffer (Tetraodon lineatus)
- Senegal bichir (Polypterus senegalus)
- Empty tank
- Western brush-tailed bettong (Bettongia penicillata ogilbyi), Southern three-banded armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus) and Southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla)*
- Western brush-tailed bettong (Bettongia penicillata ogilbyi) and White-fronted lemur (Eulemur albifrons)
- African crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata)
- Moholi galago (Galago moholi) and Brazilian porcupine (Coendou longicaudatus)
- Iberian beech marten (Martes foina mediterranea)
- African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)
- Linnaeus’ two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) and Humboldt’s night monkey (Aotus trivirgatus)
- Electric eel (Electrophorus electricus)*
- Burmese rock python (Python bivittatus)
The * represents species that were signed in an exhibit but weren't seen for a reason or another (the electric eel tank was empty, for example). I'm not 100% sure there were white-faced lemurs in with the bettongs since there was no sign of them and it was too dark to notice small details in the enclosure but I did 100% see a species of Eulemur in there, and since the whitefaces weren't seen in their usual exhibit I assumed they have been moved here.

Coendou is prehensilis, not longicaudatus ;)

Thank you for the update!

Hello, does anyone have any information on the current number of penguins at Faunia ? I've listed the following species, but I don't know if everything is still correct :
Adelie Penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) = 4 individuals (1 male & 3 females)
Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua)
King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus)
Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) = 2 individuals (male "Pesto" and female "Carbonara") arrived in 2023 from Antwerpen Zoo
Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus) = 5 individuals
Eastern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome filholi) = colony arrived in 2025 from France
Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) = 3 individuals
Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti)

In my visit the first of february of this year I was able to see single individuals of both chinstrap and Adelie penguins, although I do not know if more are at the park. The macaroni penguins are still just the pair that arrived from Antwerp and for what I photographed I saw at least four rockhopper penguins (Before the arrival of the Antibes penguins).
I didn't count how many king, Humboldt, and gentoos the park currently houses, but they have pretty sizable groups.

Gotta say, as much as I enjoyed my visit to the zoo, the night house's cohabs were atrocious
