Send your list that should be utilized to the Washington Football Team. They're in need of a more interesting name. Let's see- Washington Jackals, Washington Warthogs, Washington Raging Rhinos, Washington Gila Monsters, Washington Tarantulas. They have tons of options!

What do any of those have to do with DC, though?

Many sports teams have names that don't relate to the city though. When was the last time that you saw a tiger walking down the streets of Detroit, or a wild jaguar in Jacksonville? With a few exceptions, I think most sports teams are not necessarily named after animals that the location has specific ties to. I also just said Washington Football Team because after the change from the Redskins for perfectly valid reasons they now have perhaps the lamest football team name ever. At least they have already said it is temporary, though.

All of those teams have a reason for their name, though; the Carolina Panthers are the only animal name that was just because it sounded cool. The Detroit Tigers, for example, got their name from the Detroit Light Guard, a branch of the Army first formed in the early 1800s, which was nicknamed the Tigers. The Detroit Lions then took their name to go with the Tigers.
