Favorite Individual Animals

No, that would have been before Dagu's time, though Menagerie Manor was one of his later books I know. Jersey's first orangs were a Bornean pair, Oscar and Bali, followed later by Giles(Bornean) and Gina(Sumatran)- then Gambar who came from London later. Any reference to orangutans in that book would have been one of those I imagine. Dagu has been there during the last couple of decades (can't remember exact arrival date without a check-up..)
Dagu moved to Jersey from Dudley on 27 March 1998.

I have a soft spot for Indali, the Indian elephant approaching her 4th birthday at Chester. I saw her within hours of her birth, on my first zoo visit after my mother's final illness: it seems rather odd when I write it down, but seeing a new-born elephant calf helped to lift my mood that day. Naturally I was very concerned when she developed EHV and I was so pleased when she recovered after intensive treatment by the zoo's vets and keepers. I hope that she will go on to have a calf of her own in a few years time.

For me, there is little question - Rajang the orangutan that lived in Colchester Zoo. He was such a character and always seemed just as fascinated at the visitors as they were of him. You may have seen videos online of him "kissing" women's baby-bumps, plus there's the stories of how he often got his own tools so he could help out the keepers if he wanted to. Suffice to say, he will never be forgotten.

Jonathan, Western common chimpanzee, North Carolina zoo:
Born: 1996
He is the friendliest ape that I have ever met, and when he first saw me, I could tell that he liked me.

Kurt and his little "brother" Ollie. (AKA: Trey!)

They're Przewalski's horses currently at the San Diego Safari Park. What's so special about them?

They're clones of a genetically valuable Przewalski's horse stallion who was named Kuporovic!

Honorable mention: Elizabeth Ann! The world's first cloned Black-footed ferret. Although she doesn't live in a traditional zoo.
