Favorite Music :)

No those are awards, recognitions, and record breaking accomplishments. Why even argument about this? If you ask anyone out on the street they would say MJ without hesitation.

I've been gnashing my teeth and trying to keep out of this for ages, but here goes....

Why argue about this? Because you're being a zealot refusing to even consider the possibility that anyone might have a different, and equally valid, opinion to you. It's art, it's personal and each to their own.

I'm on the street, my friends are on the street and nobody I know rates Michael Jackson that highly -but I wouldn't expect a blinkered Michael Jackson fan(atic) to realise that. Along with Elvis fans you live in a bubble where contrary views are unusual, all your friends probably agree with you but they're not the whole world. Personally I believe that because Michael Jackson's personal life and death (like Elvis) were so messy and his end tragic and early that a number of fans (not necessarily you) have elevated him in their minds to some kind of perfect, genius, saint-like figure. The same thing happened with "Princess Diana" and like Michael Jackson and Elvis she was a flawed human being like the rest of us.

Back to a musical argument, I'd say in my opinion (others may differ and they're allowed to, it's art after all) those that are passionate about music (not just one artist or genre) may appreciate and respect Michael Jackson's music but wouldn't elevate him above all others (at best he's on a level with many other equal but different talents*) whilst those that seem to have got hooked on Michael Jackson early don't seem to have developed a wide musical knowledge/appreciation. If I'm being ****** they're people who are not that much into music but have found something easy listening, non-threatening and non-challenging and got very obsessed about it. To be honest, I've never met anyone who's into a wide range of music that was obsessive about Michael Jackson (they may exist I've just never met any).

Finally, don't equate popularity and financial success with quality. I'm sure Harry Potter and Shades of Gray have sold more than Hemmingway, Steinbeck or Orwell but that doesn't make them better literature.

To be fair Michael Jackson probably is the "King of Pop" but, to me, that's like saying someones the "King of vanilla things", great if you like vanilla things but not so if your tastes are a little more complex.

* personally there's many I'd rate above him

If you disagree then tell me what you think qualifies as "the King of Music"?. I'd like to point out that I believe Cinzoo man is saying that Michael is the king of the industry of music. Either way I would agree to both.

What all music? Including Rag Time, Punk Death Metal?

Slightly more baser, how can he be king and reign over anything when he's dead?

I doubt that there is anyone who can claim that title. If you had to boil it down, then you would look for someone who has superior credentials in multiple diverse generas (e.g. Pop, Jazz, Classical, Ethnic). It also needs to be someone who is a leader in their respective genera(s). Someone against whom the majority of comparable musicians are compared. Preferably someone who is both an instrumentalist and a vocalist. Someone who performs live and in studio. Someone who writes/composes music and doesn't simply play what others write for them.

With all this criteria, I can only come up with one name that fits the category of complete musician, and that's Wynton Marsalis. He's won 9 Grammys in 4 different categories (Jazz Album, Jazz Solo, Classical Instrumental Solo, and Spoken Word) and a Pulitzer Prize. Not a perfect fit for "King of Music," but it's as close as I can come without making my brain hurt too much.

Obviously you aren't thinking straight, it's called stats, moves, heart, and soul.So now you want to talk about influential [powerful] songs, okay? Every artist that has lived after a certain point would say they were influenced by his work. Listen to Man in the Mirror, Human Nature, Black or White, You Are Not Alone, Human Nature, Heal the World, The Lost Children, The Way You Make Me Feel, and of course Thriller. If you want to talk about influential as a person, then there wouldn't enough room for a list on here.

Yeah, I hear Nirvana and Skrillex and Mumford & Sons are massive fans. Stop being such a meglamaniac, are you basically saying anyone who makes music for evermore would say Michael Jackson influenced them? What a deluded zealot you're coming across as, a militant religion would love you as a member.

Coming from the words of Usher. Even Justin is inspired by him, sadly he's trying to become him:mad:

Because Legends Never Die.

Yes they do, I'll guarantee you there's people who were legends in time gone past who only scholars/historians remember anymore. There's people of today's youth who won't know of some of the 1930's/1940's bluesmen and in a century hardly anyone will remember them. Realistically the same will happen with Michael Jackson, no-one but a few will remember him any more than people today remember The Great Vance.

Everyone's a legend to someone, but I think Odysseus will outlast Jackson. Armstrong* -now there's a legend with legs to last.

*Neil, not Lance or Stretch

Also, probably Louis.

This is the best argument ever :)

Have you never head of a metaphor??? Michael's music, spirit, soul, and love will remain in our hearts forever.

Sorry, my heart isn't an open gateway that accepts anything people say.
I enjoyed some of his music, but you are taking it too far. Must you bash everyone who has a different opinion than you? I'm going to stop arguing here. I completely respect your opinion of Michael Jackson being your favorite musician, but other people can have their own opinions too. This is something people are supposed to learn in kindergarden. What if I tried to establish on this thread that I believe Journey completely dominated every single other musical group and wouldn't accept the fact that other people might not think so?

Well, I'll throw out for consideration Pat Metheny, 19 Grammys in 4 or 5 categories (category names have changed, so a little hard to tell). The Mozart of our times?

Yes, i like seeing Wyton marsalis and pat metheney being recognized as the great musicians of our time. Latin american music which has not been mentioned here at all was changed by Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and Carlos Santana, all notable instrumentalists. Antonio Carlos Jobin created bossa nova about 5o years ago and changed the course of music, worldwide.
MJ was not an instrumentalist at all, he was a song and dance man. The great musicians on his albums were arranged by Quincy Jones and before by Berry Gordy. Stevie Wonder
is a much more complete musician as he is a composer, singer and instrumentalist. This is just to put things in perspective, because MJ was a good singer and dancer.

Good call. I'm sometimes ashamed of my jazz knowledge.

I played quite a bit of Latin music in grad school. Our conductor specialized in it. I really fell in love with some of the art and folk music of Peru.

I just came across a pretty funny song today:

You can't beat a bit of Lonely Island! :)
You really should check out 'Jack Sparrow' by them and Michael Bolton, it's a lot better than it sounds! ;)

Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton) - YouTube

Can't argue with you there. One of my favorites is "Like a Boss", and you can find it on their YouTube page. I'm not going to post it here because, let's just say the language might not be "appropiate" for this forum.:D
