I've been curious about the reading habits of zoochatters for a while but only thought of posting a thread on it now.

What is your favourite book (or books) of all time ?

What literary genres do you like to read ?

Who are your favourite authors (non-fiction or fiction) ?

* I should specify that my question is meant in the general sense of books and literature rather than literature specifically related to zoos or animals.

I love Jurassic Park it’s about ten times more violent and better than the movies.

I don’t really have a specific genre I like, I just don’t like realistic fiction, or poems, I mean I’m more interested in finding out how/if Tim survives a velociraptor attack then to know if Darla goes to the prom with Jerry or not. They just have to have good stories really.

And as with genres, I don’t really have a favorite author.

When you say "Jurrasic park" do you mean the book by the author Michael Crichton ?

If so, then I haven't read the book (though I saw the original movie in the cinema when it came out and loved it) but have read another Crichton book ("The Terminal Man").

I think in some ways just like with (Phillip K Dick and Margret Atwood) as a sci-fi writer Crichton was a bit of a prophet.

Yes I do mean the novel by Michael Crichton, my favorite scene was probably the Nedry chapter (which was so violent it wasn’t even funny), or the second river raft chapter. Plus the dinosaurs were more realistic.

Well haven't read the book but as I've said I thought the original film was excellent (never bothered to watch the other newer films though).

If the book inspired it then it must be brilliant.

I'm a massive Terry Pratchett fan, own pretty much every novel of his (God knows what happened to my copy of Carpet People...). Favourite book is probably either Jingo or Thud! by Pratchett. Other authors that I particularly enjoy are Robert Rankin, Tom Holt, Neil Gaiman, and strangely enough James Herbert.
Apart from novels I also read a fair few graphic novels (comics), usually from Marvel and usually featuring Deadpool or a Spider-man of some sort.

Terry Pratchett was also pretty vocal in his support for conservation and particularly orangutang conservation if I remember correctly.

A great and incredibly creative writer !
 
I am bit old-fashioned, when it comes to favorite Literature. My preferred author is Umberto Eco RIP and especially his novel Foucault's Pendulum. I admire also Steinbeck, Remark, Kazantzakis, Dostoyevsky, O. Henry. From the contemporary authors would recommend Fredrik Backman.

Nothing wrong with that, Umberto Eco was a brilliant writer, "Name of the rose" was great.

Seeing as you have mentioned Umbert Eco, I have to recommend a writer for you that is one of my favourites of all time and that has similar themes but is South American.

Have you read any books by Jorge Luis Borges ?

Thank you @Onychorhynchus coronatus . Yes, I am familiar with Borges and mainly with his short stories.
