Favourite Novels

Talking of fantasy films and guillermo del toro , have you seen Pans labyrinth ? it is a wonderful film as it combines elements of harsh and violent reality and recent history with disturbing fantasy , i strongly reccomend it for you to see zambar my friend , actually i have put alot of hope in guillermo del toro that he remains faithful to the middle earth envisaged by peter jackson , i read recently that he will change the appearance of the "wargs" to appear more like the wolves of norse mythology and less like the hyena looking creatures of the lord of the ring films

See 'favourite movies'. ;)

And sometimes I think that I'm more glad that del Toro's directing! The wargs appearence in LOTR bugged me slightly, so I'm glad he's going back to how Tolkien envisioned them. Not to mention he'll giving the films of that innocence they had, meaning a more fantastical Middle-Earth.

I see what you mean , but my hope is that Guillermo del Toro doesnt get carried away with his own artistic vision of middle earth , id like very much if "The Hobbit" can be tied in with "the lord of the rings" . I enjoyed reading the hobbit but i prefered the lord of the rings for its darkness and menace , i love tolkiens books as they contain many human truths despite being set in a fictional world. His imagination is unrivaled , and it is truly a pleasure reading his books , the languages he created for the inhabitants of middle earth and their complex histories.

He promises to keep his Middle-Earth, and with Sir Peter, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens producing and writing the second script, they'll be sure to keep that in check. ;)

So more than two years later and has anyone read any more greats books? At the minute I'm one and a half books into A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin and I love it. I started with the TV series and I've always been behind with the books. I'm hoping to overtake the show in the break for the 3rd season. Another novel I'd recommend, that I read a while ago, is Everything is Illuminated (another great read by the same author is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) and it's been turned into a movie with Elijah Wood. It is seriously laugh out loud funny. There is one part where the two Ukrainian tour guides are arguing about whether or not Sammy Davis Jr. (and Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.; their dog) is Jewish or not.

Right now I am reading "The Paris Vendetta" by Steve Berry. It's an action-adventure novel chocked full of facts that the author uses to spin a good yarn.

My new favorite if Moby Dick. I think anyone interested in natural history should read this one.
