That’s a shame
I visited this collection back in 2022 and spoke to some of the staff and they had big plans for expansion of the zoo but maybe this has been shelved now

The building of housing is dependent on planning permission, which may be granted soon. The sale of the land is because the zoo apparently has lost £1,000,000 since the pandemic and its electric bill has rocketed.The zoo is renaming itself The Fenn Bell Conservation Project
 
The zoo has put in a planning application for a new veterinary hospital and food preparation and storage, it will be a single storey building. The current zoo keepers Lodge will also be refurbished.
 
The application for the zoo to sell land so that 44 new houses can be built adjacent to the zoo will be held by councillors at the Medway Council Planning Committee on September 25th where they will make their final decision. The zoo needs the sale of the land to keep the zoo afloat. Unfortunately the zoo owner Andrew Cowell has been subjected to personal abuse on Facebook. St Mary's Hoo where the zoo is sited has currently 90 homes and there have been 65 objections to the application.
One councillor was quoted as saying that St Mary's Hoo community does not consider Fenn Bell Zoo to be a community asset, it's a community nuisance.
It sounds very serious for the future of Fenn Bell Zoo.
 
Medway Council Planning. Committee has deferred on making a decision ,much to the delight of many of the locals. Which way the future of Fenn Bell zoo goes is any bodies guess!
 
Post this afternoon about a missing binturong

Early this morning our keepers discovered that one of our binturong had breached their enclosure.

If anyone has a sighting, please immediately call 07898658908 whilst trying to keep an eye on her location from a safe distance.

Suki was last seen in the Bell Wood area of St. Mary Hoo. She will likely not approach people, but please DO NOT approach, attempt to catch or corner her as she will likely be scared and nervous.

Our keepers are naturally distraught and her welfare is our number one priority. We have informed the local authorities and are confident we can recover her safely but will require your assistance in doing so, by calling the number above.

We are conducting a full investigation that remains ongoing until she can be recovered.
 
I visited the zoo yesterday, they have started building a tropical house from where the coatis used to live down to the fishing Cat enclosure. they have gotten rid of the fishing cats and are keeping the serval in their enclosure, and the coatis in what used to be the caracal enclosure. The enclosure that I thought was meant to be for the gibbons has now become home to 3 white faced Capuchin, and the meerkat enclosure has become an aviary also housing a hornbill which of which the species wasn't stated.

Good news about the new Tropical House, especially with how expensive it is to run one of those things. When so many collections are struggling, it's nice to hear something positive. Could I ask, do you know if the owner got permission to build the houses ?
 
Out of curiosity, does anyone know if they still have raccoon dogs? Zootierliste says they do, but it doesn't seem that they're listed on the zoo's website (last mention of them on the Wayback Machine is in August of 2022)
