Sally Baldwin helped the massive overhaul of the zoo in 1988. She helped increase the size of the park, improve animal exhibits, and initiated a volunteer program. Her contributions to the zoo helped ensure its success in the future. She passed away on July 5th, 2013, after diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Coincidentally, her passing is very close to Ted Reed's passing, former director of the National Zoo, who also helped reshape the zoo. This ZooChat memorial to her is based off of DavidBrown's obituary of Ted Reed.
