A very interesting topic. 20 years ago I tried to put a hydrophone into an aquarium containing my breeding group of Tropheus duboisi (a mouthbrooding cichlid from Lake Tanganyika) after reading that another species in the genus made a range of sounds. I could just about convince myself that I could hear something when the male displayed to a female, but the sound was almost completely drowned out by the filters in the tank and I could not find a way around the problem without endangering the fish.
