Fishing Cat Conservation In Thailand Gets Generous Support from Zoos

Hello petecutter,

This is the sort of in situ support project that benefits greatly from financial aid and technical expertise from zoological institutions. It is to be applauded that institutions like the Minneapolis Zoo, Minnesota and Cincinnati Zoo, Ohio both support this project.

A long term by-product, I hope (as an erstwhile field researcher in a developing nation), is the training and incorporation into an conservation ethic NGO or governmental organisation of local Thai researchers.

I would also like to see some in situ support from the local zoo organisation Thai Zoo Organisation. Khao Kheow Zoo might be a stepping stone for this as they already run an ex situ clouded leopard project.

I would be happy to remain in contact with you on this.

Great Idea

Hi K.B.

The Fishing Cat Project shares it's roots with the Clouded Leopard project in Thailand--both were initiated with generous funding from Friends of the Smithsonian National Zoo.

I agree we should encourage support for in-situ projects among Thai zoos. It is worth noting that the Fishing Cat Project is generating a growing level of support from the Wildlife Conservation Division.

Khao Khieow has hosted a number of great training events for the Cloudy and FC projects and we look forward to a growing sense of cooperation between ex-situ and in-situ efforts.
