Five Sisters Zoo Park Five Sisters Zoo

I'm toying with the idea of visiting Five Sisters later this month when I'm off work. This would be my first visit, so for those who know the place well, roughly how long would I need to get around the whole zoo and see everything? Because I'd be going up there by train and I'll need to factor in which trains to get there and back. Also, which part of the zoo are the cheetahs and clouded leopards in? Because the map on the website hasn't been updated to include them.

Well, I've not been since those arrivals but I'd argue it's safely a 2.5 to 3 hour zoo at *most* and can be done in less fairly easily.

The clouded leopards are on opposite side to the bear den, the cheetahs are along a path when coming out of the river walk, although the cheetah’s main enclosure isn’t completed yet.

I always pair it with Scottish Owl Centre in one day, if you’re interested in rare owls:)

That wouldn't be feasible for @Jambi sadly, given he is relying on train travel - although the two collections are quite close together they are accessed via completely different railway lines, so he would need to double-back to Edinburgh to get between the two.

Ahh, that’s a shame:(

Does anyone know if there was a Fennec fox birth here, as the only one that came out on my visit appeared smaller than usual.

Are Annie and Phoenix the Meerkats who survived the fire of 2013 still alive, additionally are the surviving female Otter and Mork and Mindy the Crocodiles still at the Zoo.

I’m not sure about the meerkats or otters but I know the crocodiles are still alive. They actually came from Edinburgh in 2007 after their reptile house closed.

Spectacled Caiman is very small and is in the exhibit next to the West African Dwarf Crocodiles.

Rusty Spotted Cats appear to be a new addition just along from the Snow Leopard. They were finishing off exhibit so don’t know if arrived yet but all signage is up for them.

One of the Snow Leopards will be leaving the collection soon to join another collection in the UK.

Nice! Their animal collection is nearly rivalling Edinburgh now!

Last time I visited, the snow leopards are sisters and cannot be together anymore and are rotated, so the plan for a while has been to move one of them.

So that would make their cat collection now: lions, cheetahs, clouded leopards, snow leopards, Eurasian lynx, fishing cats, Scottish wildcats, and rusty-spotted cats? Am I missing any? That's a very excellent cat (and carnivore in general) selection for such a small zoo
Axe Valley has Caracal, Serval, Lynx, Rusty-spotted Cat, Fishing Cat and Leopard Cat. Exmoor has the first five of those plus Clouded Leopard, Sand Cat and Puma

That's all of them. I think that they should get some kind of canid in the future too (bush dogs maybe?)

Visited yesterday for the new year:

• It was packed because it was free admission and none of the food shops or rides were open.

• Saw one of the rusty spotted cats- they are in two mirror image cages which was formerly one of the bird of prey cages opposite the snow leopards. The enclosure has some nice climbing frames and is well furnished overall

• The caiman enclosure has been refurbished since the gators left.

• The whole entrance area with the tom thumb zoo and chimpanzee cage display has been converted into an enclosure for the African spurred tortoise.

• A (second?) enclosure for the meerkats is being built where the cape porcupine/dwarf mongooses were.

• The plants in the clouded leopard enclosure have grown loads since I last visited.

• The fishing cat enclosure has been replanted slightly

• Because of torrential rain for the last few days, the tarmac next to stream has been moderately damaged, the bridge that used to go over to the deer enclosure has been destroyed and lots of sticks and mud are up next to the path.

• Both snow leopards are still at the zoo

• A new cape porcupine enclosure has been made next to the goats on the hill which is on the path to the cheetahs. It doesn’t look that interesting, but seems fine for the porcupines.

• No sign of brown bears, clouded leopards, tapirs, badger, prairie dogs, otters and many other species since it was quite cold and damp.
