A 10,000-plus acre tract the state plans to buy in Hendry County is prime habitat for Florida panthers.

It's also part of a proposed 37,000-plus acre project designed to cut harmful Lake Okeechobee discharges to the Caloosahatchee River.

How the purchase will affect the project remains to be seen, according to the South Florida Water Management District.
