As Giraffe are featured on their zoo website then its no surprise they are starting the ball rolling to get them.

This vacancy is advertised on the BIAZA website

ZOO KEEPER
Full time position, working on the development of Wales’ only Giraffe enclosure, with opportunities for future progression.

Successful candidate must have:
*At least 2 years experience working with hoof stock, preferably Giraffe.
* *Excellent communication and customer service skills essential.
*Full, clean driving licence.

Could this mean the beginning of the end for Manor House?????As i always thought Manor House would suit Giraffes better,if they keep a none breeding group of hybrids i will be very impressed with them for helping to stop hybrid Giraffes been born in the U.K.

Is this another Noahs Ark Farm in the making? Will keep an eye on developments.

Folly Farm has been going for some time and has been steadily adding exotics to their collection, mostly surplus hoofstock from BIAZA collections. They have also acquired breeding program species such as bongo. I don't think you can lump them with Noah's Ark Zoo Farm Park...

NO NO NO NO this place cannot be put in the same bracket as Noahs for starters they actually finish off the enclosures properly and not tie the barriers in place with a bit rope to hold it in place.

Damn, beat me to it!
And Folly farm is MUCH better than Noah's ark zoo! Pretty A,B,C collection, but it's still a nice place and has some unusual species (well, One... Fossa :))

Well couldn`t let somebody tar the place with the same brush as Noahs, they also have a group of Arabian Oryx or at least they did when i last visited.

Yeah I agree, and they did have Oryx, 2 I think.

Probably my favourite animals at Folly Farm are the Mangalista ( Hungarian woolly ) pigs !

The fossa enclosures are very high with plenty of scope for climbing .

I visited in about 2003/4 and i was plesantly suprised i must admit.

As far as the Oryx go, the website makes no mention of them but ISIS lists them as having 5 females.

They're already there? That came around quickly!

There is a picture in the local paper today of the newly arrived giraffe at Folly Farm with keeper Tim Morphew . They are described as hybrid giraffe and there are 4 of them - Rafiki , Jaja , Khama and Taharqa . I do not know where number 4 came from .

Cool, are there any pictures of the enclosure? Do they plan on breeding or are they one sex group?

Thanks for that. The house looks really nice, really light and airy. Shame they didn't show the outdoor exhibit, but from what I remember (if it's the one the Zebra are in), it's a decent sized field with a few trees in the middle. However I can imagine they'd be confined to the small hardstanding all winter, shame it isn't a bit bigger.

.

I have seen some of these at (I think it was) Banham.

They are closely related to- and may be partially descended from- English Lincolnshire Curly Coated Pigs, which became extinct in the Uk in the late 1950's. However some had earlier been exported to Eastern Europe and I think the present day Mangalitza may have some of their genes....

I assume Rafiki was born at Marwell and then moved to Flamingoland as another article in today's local paper says all 4 giraffes have the same father .

Whilst they are very likely to be the first Welsh zoo giraffes I do not believe they are the first giraffes to be seen in Wales . I am pretty certain that one of the big travelling circuses appearing in Swansea many years ago ( late fifties or early sixties ) - probably Chipperfield's - had a giraffe which was led round the ring . Many rare species were to be seen travelling the country in those days - including my first snow leopards with Roberts Brothers circus .
