Football World Cup 2010

England played more offensive than the germans did. Their only mistake was that they neglected their defense. That way germany only had to be patient, and use the opportunities they got.

Interesting observations here by one and all. I've watched every minute of all 62 matches thus far, and even though my beloved English crashed out in disgrace I've been rooting for the Netherlands to finally lift the world's greatest sporting trophy. The final should be exciting, and having two countries that have never won the World Cup adds to the flavour of the match.

So many questions - will Spain's close-passing game break down a Dutch team who are used to inflicting their own passing game on the opposition?

Will Torres and Van Persie finally come to life?

Will Fabregas get a game?

Will the Octopus finally choke at the final hurdle?

Will Bongorob find a spurious Spain/Stoke connection in case the Iberians win?

Actually I've now got two connections between Stoke City and Spain.

On 24th April 1963 Stoke drew 2-2 with Real Madrid. A crowd of 44,914 attended what was Soke City's centenary celebration match. It has since been proven that Stoke Football Club was formed in 1868, thus the 'centenary' was 5 years early.

The second connection is stretching things a bit.

I used to know a girl who lived in my street and she was very, very good at netball. In high school she played for the school, the city, the county and was also selected for the England under 16 squad. The trials were in Bournemouth and she couldn't afford to go.

Anyway Heather went to school with Steve Bould who was a Stoke player 1980-1988. They both left school in 1979. Steve won the sportsman of the year award and she won the sportswoman of the year award.

Now for the connection part. Heather used to go on holiday to Spain and knew someone who went on to play for Stoke. (I told you it was petty).

I have a connection to both of them. I took Heather to Chester Zoo in 1975 and 1976 and I've been to Living Coasts in Torquay. Steve Bould played for Torquay United in 1988, on loan from Stoke.

I'm hoping for a Netherlands win, I picked them while the group stage was in progress.

I chose the Netherlands, but after seeing how they played I'm ashamed to admit it.

I grew up watching the great Dutch players of the late 1970s and I was disgusted with the tactics employed by the Netherlands yesterday. Their main tactic seemed to be commit as many fouls as they could get away with.

Well done Spain, Netherlands didn't deserve to win.

Totally right, Bongorob - the Dutch coach decided they weren't good enough to win a game of football & tried to kick Spain off the park instead. A pity, because it looked a decent game at times.

At least there were three Englishmen on the pitch (about the same as for a Premiership game)

Also congratulations to the Spanish Team (and KEEPER, who I presume is still celebrating):).
But my dear Spanish fellows: It is time to think about your food behaviours. Stop eating calamares, otherwise the octopus Paul (from Sealife Oberhausen) will be no longer on your side...:)

By the way: Also congratulations to a young and attractiv playing german team (only exception against Spain) for their 3rd place.

I was on Tenerife during the game England - Germany. And believe me, it was the quitest/calmest night on that Island after the 4:1-Slap. You could suddenly hear the cycades...:) And the next day, all the 5:1-England-win-in-Munich-T-Shirts were disappeard. The weirdest thing was, that the biggest smile was not on german faces but on that of scotish and irish hotel guests....

Calamares are squid not octopus, octopus it's pulpo. :D but WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!! ;)
And the next challenge it´s the basketball world cup in Turkey, came on team! ¡Podemos!

Yes, but they are related (Cephalopods) and I guess that Paul is not happy when you're eating his cous:)

The netherlands were too nervous, and played very physical, that's true ( nigel the jong deserved red), but the referee was not good. Did everyone notice he gave the netherlands a yellow card for a comitted foul, and didn't do that for spain at similar occasions? And that the spanians were very eager to lay down, to make a foul look worse than it actually was?

Ok, I have spitted out my anger about the referee, for the rest, spain deserved the title, for playing a better game. Congratulations on my behalf.

Edit:
I forgot to mention that pulpo/octopus is a important item in another spanish dish: in some variations of paella.:)

@Johnny: About the fouls a have the same opinion (more or less). But doesn't change the fact that the spanish played better and had more real chances to score. Maybe it is my fault: As a supporter of the german team, it was the first time I crossed my fingers for the oranjes - because of the bavarians in the team - and see what is happen...:)

I certainly agree that spain was better, but did you also notice that the netherlands had the best chances to score, while spain had the most? We could have won, even though spain was better. But I'm annoyed about the fact that all newspapers in the world are talking about our team as 'beasts'. Allthough nigel de jong deserved red ( I am still wondering what the hell he was thinking when he committed this foul), I didn't see anything that justifies this description. They can't seriously think of a team as beasts after one beastly act?

Well, the Dutch team were practically trying kick the Spanish off the park. Less total football, more totally awful tactics on the night I'm afraid.
