Toronto Zoo Former Toronto Zoo Animals

No the Olive Baboons are not the only ones in all of North America... Safari Niagara has some I believe off the top of my head. They are the only troop left in the AZA to the best of my knowledge. Other places like research facilities, small zoos, sanctuaries, circuses, breeders, private collectors, ect probably have them.

In the AZA the only baboon species with an SSP is Hamadryas. Geladas which are not baboons but get called baboons are also kept at the Bronx and San Diego that I know of but they are not an SSP species.
 
I'm planning on doing a massive photodump on former Toronto Zoo animals... some of these animals that used to be at the zoo honestly really caught my eye, as I've never seen them in other zoos.

P.S.: The archerfish and the snakehead were guesses from looking at the sign leading up to the Indomalaya pavilion.

They really should update that sign; it's pretty misleading for people expecting to find those species, only for them to end up not being there anymore.
 
Former resident gorilla, Sekani, has given birth to her third offspring and first with new mate Kivu. Sekani is Charles and Samatha's second offspring together. She is mom to male Mosi and female Adelina who the zoo owns. Kivu is the son of Zira who briefly resided at the zoo herself.

I was wondering about what became of the zoo's last tamandua, Simon, today. Simon's 2002 departure was documented in an episode of Zoo Diaries... man I miss that show. We never had baby tamanduas as none of the previous pairs ever bred and Simon's mate died in 1997, less than 3 years after they arrived. I decided to look at the rest of his life.

He went to Sedgewick County Zoo where he lived until he died in 2008. During his 6 years there he sired four males and two females. Two of the boys and a girl didn't live past a year old but the other three lived.

In fact his eldest daughter, Rio, is still alive in Denver. She has two offspring, a male and a female. The female, Cayenne, is recommended to breed in Washington, while the male, Salvador, who lives in Cincinnati where he's reportedly set to become a father in November.

His eldest son never sired offspring.

Simon's youngest son was just as successful as a father as his dad with 7 offspring (2.5). Only three have survived to adulthood. Two of his daughters might not be purebred southern tamanduas. Both of those girls live in Minnesota where they will be allowed to breed but strictly to produce outreach animals. One daughter, Tammie, lives in San Antonio where she has two sons of and is continuing to breed. Her elder son is to stay on and breed as well while her younger son is moving to Nashville to breed.

Nice to know Simon is living on in his grandchildren and soon to be great grandchildren.

Bichirs (I know that the bichirs came back, but only one species really did. Judging by the plural in the word, my guess is that there used to be more then one species)

Crested barbet (likely in the giant bird cage before they got phased out)
Electric catfish (I remember seeing this one on the zoo's website before it got removed... tried to see it every time I went and I had no idea where it was when it was there...)

Now this isn't about a former zoo animal specifically but we do own this animal and this is significant new for the zoo's gorilla troop.

MBundi, son of Tabitha (Toronto born), grandson of Josephine and the late great Barney, has just welcomed his firs infant at Gladys Porter. Why is this so significant? This is the first 4th generation gorilla born to the original seven wild caught infants.Josephine and Barney are the first great grandparents. Toronto is unlikely to own the baby as ownership usually goes to the mother's owner for the first infant born to a pair but it can vary sometimes based on the baby's gender. Just such a significant birth being the first in our Toronto lines to be a 4th generation with some pretty great genetic lines coming from MBundi.

This is also significant in that that this is the very first offspring to a male Calgary born gorilla, and only the second offspring total to all Calgary born gorillas!
