Zoo de Granby Former Zoo Granby animal and species held at the zoo

Tumani the eastern black rhino at the Blank Park Zoo is moving to another Zoo as part of the SSP breeding program. Well, some people might think why did I post this on the Former Zoo Granby animal thread. The reason is that Tumani was the grand-granddaughter of Cornelius, the first black rhino born in Canada and at the Zoo Granby.

This news is really a former Zoo Granby animal. I already requested for my previous post to be deleted. Spoutnik at the Dakota Zoo finally sired a cub with Nadya. The cub was born on April 17, 2025. Spoutnik was born at the Zoo Granby in 2013 to parents Jack and Mazy.

Tali the meerkat recently had pups born on July 27 at the Calgary Zoo.

History:
Tali was a meerkat that previously lived at the Zoo Granby until 2023. She and two other meerkats were transferred to the Calgary Zoo in exchange of 4 meerkats.
The Calgary Zoo on Instagram: "It’s #meerkatmonday – and our mob has some tiny new members! Over the weekend, two slender-tailed meerkat pups, born on July 27, were spotted emerging from their burrow for the very first time! Born to mom ‘Tali’, the pups spent their first few weeks underground, cared for by their close-knit group. Meerkats are social and well known for cooperative care of their young, a behavior called alloparenting. Often, a “babysitter” stays with the pups while mom ventures away from the burrow—in our mob, male ‘Karoo’ has taken on the majority of this important role. This is nine-year-old Tali’s first litter—and the first litter of meerkat pups born here since 2015! While the pups haven’t yet had their first health exams, both appear strong, healthy, and full of curiosity. Sad news, Petal, the 39-year-old hippo has sadly passed away at the Toronto Zoo. She was born at the Zoo Granby in 1986 to the original pair Sirene and Patriarche.
Rest in peace, Petal. You will be missed in both zoos.
