Dierenpark Wassenaar (Closed) Former zoo Wasenaar

Some notes about the Kookaburra's at Wassenaar because Wassenaar was among the first European zoos which succesfully bred the species.
European ( world ? ) first breeding was archieved by the London Zoo in 1905 but Wassenaar seemed to be the second zoo in Europe which bred this species which is now-a-days so common in zoos.
Feb. 1951 4 birds were imported directly from Australia and placed together in an outdoor aviary. 1953 the birds were split into 2 pairs and one pair was placed in the Louise hal and the other pair was left in the old outdoor aviary.
The pair in the outdoor aviary started to lay eggs in 1954 ( 1 egg laid ), 1955 ( 2 egg laid ) and 1956 ( 2 eggs laid from which at least was was fertile but didn't hatch ).
On April 24 1957 again an egg was laid and 2 days later a second egg was found.. On May 16 a chick had hatched and a day later the second egg was disappeared. The young did very well and on June 22 the young was seen for the first time outside the nest.
In 1960 another young was raised succesfully.
After these very early successes more zoos started to breed the species and in the 1980s annual about 30 to 50 young were raised in zoos worldwide.

My best guess for this one was Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) or Black-headed Jay (Garrulus lanceolatus)

Steller's jay is a possibility
Black-headed jay also a possibility but that would mean that they use 3 ( ! ) different names for 1 and the same species ( Zwartmasker gaai - Zwartkop gaai - Strepen gaai ) in one guide-book !

Finished but with the help of the guidebook I might be find out which species are ment by some of the ones I'm not sure at the moment.

- Vlinderkwartel = not a clue which quail-species this should be
In Australia the buttonquails have "butterfly quail" as an alternative name.

- Witte vruchtduif ( should be Witte muskaatduif ) = Silver-tipped imperial pigeon - Ducula luctuosa
Why would this not be, for example, D. bicolor or D. spilorrhoa? There are a number of white Ducula species.

Because those 2 species have other dutch names :
D. bicolor = Bonte muskaatduif
D. spilorrhoa = Australische muskaatduif
Evenso I can understand your question because... all 3 are indeed mainly white.

About the buttonquails, thank you very much, never have seen this name used in English and in Dutch also never heared it before.

Yes, but from your translations of the guidebook's lists there are multiple species which are given more than one name (i.e. one species with two or three different names in different parts of the book), and also species which are not given current Dutch names for those species. So I would be thinking that being called by the current name isn't a reason to discount other similar species.

You're right but Witte vruchtduif ( muskaatduif ) is realy the Dutch name of this species. Dubble-checked also Zootierliste and here Wassenaar is indeed mentioned as former keeper ( and breeder ! ) of Ducula luctuosa.
