Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park Formerly kept Species Zoo Tampa/Lowry Park Zoo

Hornbills are still on property just BTS for breeding purposes
Out of interest, do you know if they have any BTS breeding area for more sensitive birds? When I volunteered they had "the peasantry" BTS where more sensitive birds were kept, but it was demolished when they built the tunnel to Africa.

@SwampDonkey the only species I can confirm that are BTS for breeding are the hornbills and red browed Amazon's. The latter has two different BTS areas. The other birds that are BTS are geriatric/ medical reasons. Hope this is helpful

It is, thank you! So I can remove the red browed from the former list too, that's good to hear.

While we’re still in this discussion @SwampDonkey, seeing how it’s been quite sometime since you last updated the main list. I would be very interested as to see how the roster has been changed since that previous update.

Cool, I will do a full update list tomorrow. I will probably leave the iguana and cockatoo off for now, it would not be surprising if it is BTS. I will also leave the guenon there for now, since they are still on display currently.

Updated list, recent losses in green. Stingrays removed from the list now that the new stingray area is open.

I was looking through some archive websites of the zoo’s history; and I noticed some photographs from the late 2000s / early 2010s that captured the following species. Granted, I am unaware of when these animals left the collection, but I thought it would be of interest for both you and this thread:

Grey kangaroo
From this one site I found, there was this photo (see below) that had captioned an Eastern Grey Kangaroo / Macropus giganteus. Now, truth be told, I am not certain if the ‘Australian Outback’ attraction was still open around the same time the image was taken. But if not, then it might have been displayed in the now-former emu yard (probably).

Additionally, from the same website, I also found some photographs of the following species of lory; which, of course, were displayed in the ‘Lorikeet Landing’ aviary around the same time:
  • Red Lory / Eos bornea
  • Brown or Duyvenbode’s Lory / Chalcopsitta duivenbodei
  • Dusky Lory / Pseudeos fuscata

Finally, I know you didn’t mean to when you last updated your list. But it appears that you forgot to mention that these were Striped Hyenas.

Cool, thanks for finding that out! I thought they were spotted for some reason, but I also found a couple of old pictures that confirmed the striped species.

This was a long time ago, but I swear they had (or claimed to have) African Forest Buffalo back in 2007-2008, around the time the Ituri Forest section opened.

I remember seeing them back then

It is entirely possible, if so they were likely the same forest buffalo currently at Safari Wilderness. There were animal loans between Safari Wilderness and Lowry Park Zoo at that time orchestrated by Lex. They are real forest buffalo, IIRC some of the only ones in the states on display.

The Congo buffalo were supposedly kept in the safari area. The first time I visited they already had left and gone to Lex's other place

While the following is very brief, I did want to mention my personal discovery of these former species; and where in the zoo they were once found:

Asian Domain/Gardens:

Nilgai
“Muntjac” - (Muntiacus sp.)

Safari Africa:
Lesser Kudu
