Fort Worth Zoo Fort Worth Zoo 2008-2012

I found a list of bird species at this zoo, and I was wondering if anyone knew where any of the following were in the zoo if they were still on exhibit.

African Silverbill
Elegant Crested Tinamou
Hooded Pitta
Whistling-ducks (various)
Scaled Quail
Australian Brush Turkey
Red-winged Laughingthrush
Yellow-breasted Ground-dove
Satyr Tragopan
Crested Partridge
Blue-bellied Roller
Black-necked Aracari

The only species on your list which I recall seeing on my visit in Spring 2007 were the scaled quails, which are on exhibit in the Texas Wild! desert aviary (by the big cats).

The only birds that I know are there are the whistleing ducks. The FWZ honestly doesn't not have very much display space for birds and compared to others zoos I've been to has a very small collection (apart from their raptors).

I'm leaving for a visit to FWZ in a few minutes. I will take camera along and try and give a report on the MOLA.

Just got back home. I've got a lot of pics to upload later. Unfortunately, my camera battery died so I didn't get all the pics I wanted. The MOLA looks way behind. I asked someone at the zoo and there is no known opening date. My guess is at the earliest June or July. There is a lot of construction involving earth movers, back hoes, and other big machinery, so the finer detail work (horticulture, decoration, animals) will be done much later.

I honestly don't know about the rhinos. The most unfortunate aspect of the FWZ is the lack of keeper interaction. I have only 2 or 3 times in the past 4-5 years ever been able to talk with a keeper.

About Texas Wild:

Most of the exhibits are small but the shorebird aviary is definitely one of the best areas here.

Overall I've noticed that besides waterfowl and the MOLA when it opens most animals can be seen at other zoos within driving distance from DFW.

Fort Worth seems to have sent out its erstwhile Nepali Indian rhino pair.
Arun is now back at Fort Worth. Where have the bull and cow gone to?

As the resident FW person here I wish I could answer it. I'm pretty sure Arun is there now, as for who the female is I can't say. I do know that they will be getting a new male Black Rhino soon though.

Update from Ft. Worth. I went to the zoo today and was pleased to see a brand new baby Bonobo. It looked to be only a few weeks old. I'm surprised I haven't seen anything in the news about this.

Does anyone know anything about the elephant program in Fort Worth? Angel, Blue bonnet, and (maybe) Rasha. Angel is 23 this year... one more year until the dreaded first time breeding cut off! They have two proven breeding bulls, but only one living calf (bluebonnet) to show for it!
