Fort Worth Zoo Fort Worth Zoo News

Here's a bigger picture of the sign. It kind of looks like a room at the science and history museum, and not so much a cave. 20220929_112623.jpg

Three Texas Kangaroo Rats have been born at the Fort Worth Zoo. This is believed to be the first time this species has bred under human care. From their social media:

"Another conservation success! This little guy is one of three Texas kangaroo rats born here at the Zoo and more importantly -- to our knowledge -- the first ever born under human care! This particular species is a candidate to be federally listed as endangered as wild populations continue to decline. Since 2018, the Zoo has been working closely with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to establish an assurance colony and breed these animals under professional care. Very little is known about the reproductive biology of this species and we are documenting breeding behavior, reproductive cycles, and gestation periods. Ultimately our goal is to establish a reintroduction program for the species and now we're one step closer. Major kudos to the Zoo’s ectotherm team and our partners!"

Are there any Texas kangaroo rats on public display?

According to @Smaggledagle in the Abilene Thread, three lions (1:0 Jabulani, 0:1 Saba, and 0:1 Abagebe) will be returning to Fort Worth from the Abilene Zoo sometime in 2023. All three lions were born in South Africa back in 2011, and previously lived in Fort Worth until fall 2020.

Should be fairly soon. Some of the other carnivores for the exhibit are already on site and construction was mostly done bar some fencing on the yards and work on the landscaping.

One of the zoo's three Nile Hippo cows (don't know which one), most likely passed away last year. I was reading hipposworld.de today, and it says that in January 2023, two cows lived in the zoo. Jonsey and Daisy are both thirty-eight years old, so either of them passing away would not be that unexpected due to their age. Bubbles, the third hippo, is twenty-nine, and is Daisy's full-sister. Though unlikely, Bubbles may have been transferred to a different facility for a last chance at breeding or as a companion animal. I doubt they'd split up Jonsey and Daisy, or even move them after all their years together in Fort Worth.
Here is the link to the Nile Hippo holder details:

I was looking into the upcoming Predators exhibit for the zoo and found the species that are going to be housed in this exhibit. And overall quite a rare collection of predators.

Asian Predators
Malayan Tiger
Striped Hyena
Clouded Leopard

Hunters of Africa
African Lion
African Leopard
Cheetah
African Wild Dog

Also, are the Grant’s zebras returning?

According to a Ziprecruiter ad (public knowledge BTW) it actually looks like they'll make the switch to Sumatran tigers.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if the zebras will be returning? And for the tiger switch, I guess I haven’t heard that yet. Their website still lists that Malayan tigers will be part of the new exhibit. Maybe they forgot to change it.

Not a clue on zebras returning - I believe the reason they were phased out of the main savanna was due to bullying the other animals. I'm not entirely sure where the zebras would go if the zoo's site says they're returning...

That’s what the website says. But you do have a point, a lot of times they end up going with Amur leopards.
They do have banners on the construction fence heavily advertising African leopard, and if they went through the time and effort to import striped hyena from South Africa, chances are they'll do the same for African leopard. Amurs wouldn't stand a chance in the Texas heat, and they're gunning for *a* leopard species.
