Franklin Park Zoo Franklin Park Zoo News 2012

A corpse flower is about to bloom at the zoo. I have heard about these - apparently one of the rarest and most spectacular sights in the botanical kingdom.

In 2009 I spent a week in central Sumatra waiting for a bud of one of these to open into full bloom. Eventually I ran out of time and had to leave...and later found out it bloomed on the day I left! :(

(And just to make it doubly gutting, I also then found out that there had been a Rafflesia arnoldi in full bloom only about 500 metres away in the forest from where the Amorphophallus bud was, so I missed that one as well!! :( :()

Well, do you know what I bet? I bet that the animals at Stone Zoo and Franklin Park Zoo all need to move to a bigger and better zoo somewhere in Massachussets in the future, with new animal species including white rhinos, Nile hippos, African elephants, chimps, okapis, red river hogs, grizzly bears, moose, beavers, American alligators, Nile crocodiles, and the return of Californian sea lions, bison, orangutans, warthogs, coyotes, deer, Nubian ibexes, and polar bears.

Why? What's wrong with these zoos? I haven't heard of a truly bad exhibit at these zoos, and even if there are no outstanding exhibits, an adequate exhibit is perfectly acceptable.

deanmo19, I do not know what you bet. the only thing I am betting on, is the fact that you suffer from delusions of grandeur. ZNE will not shut down both Zoos. a new Zoo with all those animals you "fantasized" about? will never happen. period. the capital needed to acquire a new space and build those exhibits in this climate, in your "Fantasy" Zoo. won't happen. you should leave those ideas between your ears and report facts, not play "Zoo Tycoon: New England".

@ Gulo gulo, I think the reason they stopped giving their gorillas outside access is because they had escaped at least a couple of times in the past and they probably thought making the exhibit escape proof would cost too much and was too much of a liability. It's too bad that they are phasing out Cacomistle since this is the only zoo that I've been to that has them, although I can't remember if I've ever seen them awake. Coyote, no big loss, I can see and hear those behind my house. A new addition to the Markhor would be nice but I would be surprised if they could get Takin. Haven't been to Stone in a couple of months, where are they putting the Arctic Fox?

I'm looking forward to hopefully visiting one or both of these zoos, along with the New England Aquarium next year. I doubt Takin because, as I said on the Beardsley Zoo News thread about the new Asian animal coming to the collection, it wouldn't be takin as Roger Williams got them recently, and they have bragging rights as the only place in the Northeast with Takin. It's a shame that the gorillas are completely indoors now, and the zoo has done nothing for their 100th year anniversary except dinos and cranes. Nearby Beardsley, that's celebrating their 90th anniversary, has added Giant Tortoises as a temporary exhibit as well as many new animals, offers guests promotions like reduced admission, plans to bring back Reindeer, and is working on new, hopefully promising exhibits.

@ Phantom, you're right. there is a plan to net the outdoor exhibit, as well as connect that to another netted exhibit where wild dogs are located, for a bachelor group of gorillas. Of course, it all boils down to money. The female cacomistle, is going to be used as an educational animal, so she will finally be able to be seen more frequently in the ADC. agreed. the curator dislikes how the coyote are always hiding towards the back of the exhibit. he and the curator of mammals are brainstorming on possible replacements (most likely a small cat, he said). yes, that exhibit is huge and could use more movement, as the markhor are usually on the backside of the mountain away from the public. the takin are being talked about going where the old aviary was, from markhor all the way to otter. if they went in with markhor, fencing would need replacing and there is already a holding building down by wolf, where black-necked crane is. the only reason they are thinking about putting them where the old aviary is, is it is a dead-zone, from reindeer to gibbon. well, now that whooping and sandhill are on the old duck pond, guess it isn't so dead now. the arctic fox are going by the cabin, at least 2, I guess the others will be used for education animals. the lynx exhibit is getting expanded as well. thank goodness!

A heartwarming story about a little girl, who in 2004, learned about FPZ's Masai Giraffe, Beau, who was suffering from Giraffe Wasting Syndrome and her continued fundraising to help Beau.
