Franklin Park Zoo Franklin Park Zoo News 2015

Bald Eagles, Beavers, River Otters, quails, puffins / seabirds, etc.

Probably more mammals that I don't know about

A sunbittern hatched. It is the first time this has happened at FPZ since 1995.

“We have been monitoring the chick, as well as the parents’ behaviors, very closely and are very encouraged thus far,” said Frederick Beall, Zoo New England General Curator. “This is a significant hatch as the parents are the top ranked birds genetically within the North American captive managed population.”

It seems like FPZ does a good job of getting the top ranked animals for unrepresented genes. Beau and Jana were the top ranked (genetics) male and female giraffes when they first arrived in the early 2000s too.

A few days ago They announced that Beau the giraffe is having a medical exam. I really hope that nothing bad happens to him. He is one of my favorite animals at the zoo, and touches people in a unique way with the feedings. He has gone through so much. He is the longest living giraffe with wasting syndrome disease, and was at one time among the top most genetically valuable giraffes in North America.

The zoo announced that Beau's exam went smoothly. This news made my day. They don't have any results yet though.

Oh wow I didn't know that one of the giraffes was ever bitten by a zebra. It makes sense that they wouldn't announce something like that. I hope Beau has a speedy recovery.

It wasn't anything serious, the Giraffe didn't even react. I doubt the Zebra even left a mark. The Zebra's are brats but the Giraffes are more than a match for them. It occurs to me now that Giraffe must have thick skin. And they say there isn't any educational value to visiting institutions such as FPZ...

I was at the zoo today for the first time in a few months.

I learned a lot and saw lots of improvements and changes.

1. Basically all of the Children's Zoo has been demolished, but they kept Little Critters. Maybe they will keep Little Critters and redo the inside since that will save money from making whole new buildings.

2. I learned a lot about the Pygmy Hippos and their breeding and whatnot. So apparently one is on exhibit 8 hours a day, and then the other 16 hours, they are both behind the scenes with howdy doors and talking to each other. So that is actually much more encouraging than I had expected, since I didn't think they saw each other that often.

3. Also, the gorillas were really active and much more arboreal than usual today. They were climbing really high on the logs and rocks. I showed one of them (I think it was kambiri or kimani but more likely kimani) a video of Kiki and Azize and they thought it was really really interesting. Later on, I showed the same video to one of the silverbacks and they fled in terror.

4. Gulliver (the camel) was standing up today, and he was out in the field of his exhibit, unlike usual how he is normally resting in the concrete part right outside of his holding.
