Franklin Park Zoo Franklin Park Zoo News 2021

It would be SO nice if they reopened this area. There are so many cold tolerant hoofstock species, many of which are in need of new holders, that could be great additions to the zoo. Especially stuff like przewalski's horse, various caprid species, any of the Asian deer species (if CWD regulations don't prevent it), pure bison, guanaco, roan antelope, etc.
That would be nice to reopen this area. I think that the problem is is that the zoo doesn’t have enough funding.

Correct @Neil chace. From what I remember (and this goes way back):
Addax
Wildebeest
Plains Zebra
Addra gazelle
Thompson gazelle
Ruppells vulture
Ostrich
Greater Kudu
Bongo
A deer species
Bactrian Camel (have always been where they currently are as I remember)
And I want to say warthogs too

It's a pretty big area and has been closed for around thirty years. Addax were where the Koris currently are. The building that's there is the old elephant house
Thank you so much for the information. I never knew that the zoo held all the species!

Well I think funding is what would prevent them from opening the whole area at once. The zoo has enough funding that it should be able to gradually reopen the area, even if its only one exhibit each year. For instance, maybe in 2022 they reopen the first exhibit behind the red river hog habitat and each year after take the next habitat and reopen it. Ideally, I believe what the zoos number one priority should be is using up some of the wasted space. Everything the zoo currently has is good, there's just not enough of it.

A few years back, (I don’t remember which year), there was a sign that said reindeer in the yard between the camels and the Kori Bustard. I never did see the reindeer, and the sign was taken down after. I’m not sure why this sign was there, but did anyone see the possible “reindeer” in that yard?

Part of the issue is that business-wise, it is not strategic to slowly reopen a new area incrementally. By developing the whole area as a new complex at once, they would create much more excitement, and draw much larger crowds and publicity overall on the grand opening day.

It could have been a seasonal thing. Some zoos bring in reindeer in winter.

On the zoo’s social media for International Red Panda day, the zoo posted that they only have three red pandas. Gimli, Nisha, and Ban Li. I know that Gimli is a different species than Nisha and Ban Li, but I know that the zoo also had Fia, a red panda who is the same species as Gimli. Does anyone know what happened to Fia?

The zoo also had a Red Panda named Hoppy. I am pretty sure he was mating with Fia at the time, but am not 100% sure.

Also, I know that Gimli was born at FPZ (either in 2019 or 2020). If Fia and Gimli are the same species, then it would seem likely that Hoppy and Fia are (or were) Gimli's parents.

I think I saw somewhere that Fia and Hoppy were Gimli’s parents. I’m not sure where Hoppy went either.

The zoo is hosting an auction to bid to name the new giraffe calf: Giraffe Naming Auction

Also, the zoo recently updated their map to have a new art style. Its not the best, but I like it more than the design they've used for the past several years.

I don't mind this map, nor did I mind the old one for that matter. I think this is one of those zoos that it wouldn't really be easy to make an aesthetically pleasing map due to the weird layout.

The zoo has more information about the procedure on their website. It says that Kiki will be off exhibit for the next few weeks until she is healed, and that her baby Pablo will be watched by his older sisters until Kiki has recovered enough to be reunited with him.

On December 27th, the zoo announced that they had acquired (2.0) Dexter cattle named DJ and Quinn and will be located in the Franklin Farm area. The zoo also announced that they have acquired (3.0) golden pheasants which are located in the Birds World Aviary. It is unknown what facilities the pheasants or the cattle came from.
