On September 8th, the zoo announced that a (1.0) spotted hyena named Thika passed away on September 7th due to age-related issues.

Our Franklin Park Zoo community is... - Franklin Park Zoo

Wow, it’s sad to see two high-profile animal deaths at FPZ in just a single week. Thika was the second oldest Spotted Hyena in the USA, and was around 24 years old, so it is at least good to know he had a long life. I was at the zoo today and I only saw one hyena, but I didn’t think much of it until I read this post after I got home.

It also felt weird to see only one lion on exhibit, reminding me of the years when Christopher was the lone lion at Franklin Park, well before Dinari and Kamaia ever arrived. Now we have entered a new age, where Dinari will likely be the only lion at Franklin Park for years to come.

has anything else happened with nyala, last time they were in a pred-intro with the river hogs

On a happier note, I also wanted to welcome @ManedwolfLover to Zoochat. Today the hogs and nyala were officially on exhibit at the same time with no barriers between them, which was good to see.

It’s a very sad week :(

acquisition of wild dogs
I just want to clarify to everyone here. I was at the zoo recently and spoke to a zookeeper in the Tropical Forest department. Wild dogs are not definite by any means and are one of several, very feasible options that the administration is considering. Whatever animal ends up in that enclosure, I'm guessing won't arrive at the zoo for quite a while.

I was at the zoo today for the private event and I can confirm that African Wild Dogs are coming to the Hyena exhibit. There’s a sign saying “coming soon” along with a sign advertising the new hyena exhibit where the tiger was. Also the Nyala was no where to be seen but the RRH was out there.

Also I’m just learning that one of the hyenas died so who knows what is gonna happen in the new hyena exhibit when Kai is no longer with us. I always thought it was weird to move the hyenas to the tiger exhibit since they were always in the exhibit outside the Tropical Forest. Was also sad to only see one lion in the lion exhibit.

One lion, One hyena. I don’t think house can handle anymore than that? I think only five cage stals?

On the website it says you can find the Hyena in Kalahari Kingdom so they must have the move ready for when the weather changes.

Little Joe, the "uncle" in the Franklin Park Zoo's gorilla troop, was put under anesthesia so that veterinarians could uncover the source of his recent eye problems. During the procedure, they found an abscess in his mouth.

This excerpt is from a recent Facebook post.
"We are pleased to share that our adult male western lowland gorilla, Little Joe, came through his procedure just fine yesterday. The veterinary team found a dental abscess during the exam and have begun treating the infection, including prescribing a regimen of oral antibiotics and pain medications.
His care team will continue to monitor his recovery closely, and our veterinary team will follow up with additional treatment if needed. Joe may or may not be outside in Gorilla Grove, but guests will still be able to visit with the rest of the troop during this time."

There is a new wattled crane chick at the zoo! I love watching cranes, especially chicks, so will definitely being making a trip up soon.

From Facebook:
"Baby Alert! There's a fluffy new chick in the wattled crane habitat at Franklin Park Zoo. The chick hatched April 24 and is growing strong under the watchful eye of these first-time parents. Keeper Tip: to find the nearly 10-oz floof in its habitat, look for the parents. Wattled cranes can grow up to 6 feet high and weigh 14 pounds.
Besides the epic cute factor, we're celebrating because the baby is the first of its species to hatch here! Zoo New England participates in the Wattled Crane Species Survival Plan, and this birth was a recommended pairing between our Hansel and Zoolander."

On October 25th, the zoo announced that the chick, now named Franklin, will be transferred to another facility in the near future.

Then and now: Wattled crane edition... - Franklin Park Zoo
