Franklin Park Zoo Franklin Park Zoo News 2024

I know those or the same thing but I wasn't sure if @PercideRolo was referring to colobuses, guenons, or something else.

I had no clue there are plans for monkeys to join the gorillas! That's great news!

Based on the initial comment I wouldn't take this as something that is officially happening, just something that may happen or that the zoo wants to do. According to this publicly available PDF, the original plans for Gorilla Grove had colobus monkeys included too, but they were obviously cut: https://www.boston.gov/sites/default/files/file/2020/08/ZNE Landmarks Presentation.pdf

Ah, that makes more sense. It would explain why I wouldn’t have heard about it, being a volunteer and recently-appointed animal care extern at the zoo.

…huh. I know that’s combination that exists, but how does that work with this zoo in particular? The indoor gorilla exhibit is mostly fake rock, there’s not much a monkey could climb on.

they’d probably have to add some ropes or vines so that the monkeys could climb around.

Or as StoppableStan suggested, they could just use the netting over the enclosure, like with the gibbons at Stone. Then again, this should all be taken with a grain of salt, I think.

Yes I agree with Stoppable San but I think that adding even more ropes or vines would make it even better for the monkeys if they get them since the mesh roofing would only allow the monkeys to climb upside down since it’s the roof of the gorilla exhibit.

Also not to be negative, but it would be an improvement for them exhibit-wise...

Yes if they would to be sourced from Stone Zoo then the amount of space that they would have would be probably at least 10 times their current exhibit size (counting the outside gorilla exhibit). I’ve been thinking about the gureza monkeys a lot recently that I’ve been wondering if they zoo was to get the monkeys would they only have access to the interior part of the gorilla exhibit or both or not be with the gorilla in winter and be outside since they are more cold tolerant or how does everyone think that it could possibly work?

I don’t know how new this is, but today I noticed some koi in the white-naped crane exhibit.

i’m pretty sure that this is pretty new since the last time I visited was in late July and I did not see any koi in the white named crane exhibit pond.

I’m pretty sure that I’ve figured out where Everett the warthog has gone. I little while ago the zoo announced that he would be leaving for another zoo and I believe that the zoo he’s gone to is the Chattanooga zoo to be in their Cape of Africa exhibit.
Here’s my evidence. If you scroll down to the end of the article it talks about a warthog named Everett. I mean how many warthogs that happen to be named Everett can there be? I’m pretty sure that this is him.

Can confirm, Everett was sent to Chattanooga on 8/13

You know, I really do appreciate the link, but it would be appreciated if you would state what exactly the news is in addition to the announcement. :)

Aside from all that, the link states that a female Hartmann's Mountain Zebra foal was born on September 4th to parents Zoey and Khomas, and is the second zebra foal to be born at the zoo this year.

"The baby zebra weighs 87 pounds and is in good health, according to the zoo, noting that she appears “bright and alert.”

“Watching Zoey introduce her foal to her outdoor habitat has been a heartwarming experience for our staff,” Franklin Park Zoo’s Chris Bartos said. “She is an attentive mother who is taking great care in making her foal feel safe and protected.”"

Here is another article on the birth:
