Franklin Park Zoo Franklin Park Zoo News 2024

condolence to animal care staff that cared for Kit.
is Joe now the main Silverback to breed?
The one female that Kitombe was breeding with, Kiki, was the only female at the zoo recommended to breed. The zoo does not want Kiki to have any more offspring because there were complications during the delivery of her most recently born infant, Pablo.

I don't know anything about whether the Species Survival Plan will or will not recommend that Little Joe be used for breeding. If there was a breeding recommendation for animals currently at the zoo, it would be with Aziza and/or Kambiri, Kitombe's daughters whom, for obvious reasons, Kitombe wasn't breeding with.

Thank you for the info. Little Joe is in his 30’s. Will aee how the zoo and ssp go about things. Move the girls and have boy band or bring in new male to mate with the Kambiri and Aziza.
I would like them to hold of and grade the indoor exhibit and add more mulch areas and less "rock"

Have any zoo use green walls for exhibits for ape?

I personally hope that they bring in a new male for Kambiri and Aziza. Having an all male troop here would just not be the same.

The BTS holding area would not allow for much larger of a group, so it's unlikely they'd bring in multiple new individuals or have two different groups. Joe is not recommended to breed and will remain at the zoo for the rest of his life. I think Kambiri will likely be sent to another facility through the SSP as she is of reproductive age and already challenging Kiki for dominance, although I'm not sure how well represented her genetics are with two older siblings in the breeding population.

This would be a major undertaking and cost quite a bit of money, so I doubt this would happen anytime soon. They would need to have the gorillas off exhibit for an extended period of time during the construction, so it would likely happen during the off-season, meaning the troop would be behind the scenes the entire time. They also just spent a ton of time and money constructing the new outdoor exhibit, so efforts will go to other new or existing exhibits that have been waiting for improvements first.

So what do you think is most likely going to happen for the gorillas? With Kiki not breeding anymore, Kambiri challenging her, and Aziza and Pablo just messing around being adolescent animals along with Little Joe being not recommended to breed what would happen from here forward?
