Feel free to comment on any missing or misidentified animals. I feel like I missed the crocodile but I don't know if it's off exhibit right now.

Thanks for the list. Having only 27 mammal species (excluding domestics) isn't a lot, but I suppose it's not too shabby for a mid-sized zoo. Also, it will be great when African Penguin Coast and the expansion of the African Savannah both open in 2026.

When I visited in July I didn't attempt to make a full list of species but I do have photos of signs on my phone and I think you may have missed a few bits.

I myself very nearly missed the warthog and crested porcupine exhibits sort of in a bit of a corner opposite Nature's Neighbourhood.

I also have a picture of a sign for western grey kangaroo. Not sure if this is in addition to eastern grey that you list.

They also had a large walkthrough butterfly house with some birds and turtles as well but this is presumably seasonal. Also you list several things as off exhibit which were definitely on exhibit when I was there but this may be seasonal as well.

I count 30 mammal species (excluding domestics) from the list in the original post + a few more that may have been missed. So mid-30s or about 40 including domestics.

I very nicely filled a day combining this zoo with the New England Aquarium (with an Uber between them). 3-4 hours in each place.

Also worth noting that the society that maintains Franklin Park Zoo also has a second place on the other side of town: Stone Zoo. I would perhaps suggest that while Franklin Park Zoo's collection is richer in birds, Stone Zoo has quite a few rare and interesting mammals.

  • Long-Haired Fruit Bat (Stenonycteris lanosa): only kept at 4 North American zoos, according to Zootierliste

Signed as Ruwenzori Long-haired Fruit Bat Rousettus lanosus stenonycteris - I'm not sure if this is actually supposed to correspond to a subspecies or if they've written in the new genus name as if it's a subspecies for some strange reason.

I think I misread the sign then, it was a western grey kangaroo

What animals did I miss? The warthog exhibit had been combined with the porcupine with only a sign for porcupines. The butterfly house is seasonal

Can a moderator change Eastern Grey Kangaroo to Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus)?

I very nicely filled a day combining this zoo with the New England Aquarium (with an Uber between them). 3-4 hours in each place.

I re-counted and excluding all of of the Franklin Farm animals, I still get 27 different mammals and that's even including two species that were listed as being off-exhibit. :)

I totally agree with the idea of combining Franklin Park Zoo with New England Aquarium and I did exactly that in 2012. It's similar to the Maryland Zoo/National Aquarium combo day in Baltimore and the Chattanooga Zoo/Tennessee Aquarium combo day in Chattanooga.

I just thought you may have missed the warthog and porcupine since I did the first time I went around that section. You don't include warthog in your original list. You also list porcupines as Cape porcupines, africaeaustralis. The ones in the exhibit next to warthogs were crested porcupines, cristata. Not sure if these correspond to the same animals.

My bad, I miscounted. So you're right of course.

Warthogs weren't there and the signs were whitened/painted. The only sign for the porcupines were Cape Porcupines but online it says crested porcupine.

The studbook for African crested and cape porcupines (2023) indicated that Franklin Park Zoo holds 1.1 Cape porcupines (Hystrix africaeaustralis), Kiazi and Penelope. The SSP, also from 2023, indicated the zoo wished to transfer these animals. So unless in the past year they were transferred out and replaced with crested porcupines, I think it is safe to assume they are in fact cape porcupines.

I don't think I have any pictures of the actual animals, but I attach a picture of the sign that describes them as crested.
