Fresno Chaffee Zoo Fresno Chaffee Zoo News 2019

That’s actually not entirely true. Miss Betts actually has a sister at the North Carolina Zoo
Oh. My bad. I thought I remember one of the keepers saying that she was Amy's only offspring. Thank you for correcting me. I am glad that her line isn't totally lost. None-the-less Betts will be missed greatly. It was so nice to see the four of them out on exhibit together.

No, @ChaffeeZooFan is correct. Betts does indeed have a half sister in North Carolina (as well as a half brother in Baltimore), but they're all related through their father, Willie, not their mothers. So this is indeed the end of Amy's line, sadly.

These exhibits have transformed the zoo from a struggling mediocre establishment and put it on the map.

It's definitely on the map.

I made my first visit over the weekend and was impressed with the zoo overall; a lot of the locals seem impressed too from overhearing their conversations. If I was a local, however, I'd be irritated. While I understand that they're expected to open more sections over the years, it seems to be missing a large swath of species.

The bird collection was mediocre, but bonus points for having a bateleur eagle. The primate collection was abysmal, and you need another ape species. Bonobos would be nice, but I'd settle for chimps.

...with construction for Kingdoms of Asia beginning early 2019. This will bring bigger better exhibits to the Malayan Tigers

I didn't see any actual construction going on aside from something behind the gift shop next to the Kopje Lodge (Lounge?), but improved, and I mean vastly improved, tiger exhibits are my top concern for this reno. The current exhibit is wonderfully planted, but it's no bigger than my apartment.

...Sloth Bears, Komodo Dragons, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Sumatran Orangutans, as well as a few new species to the zoo.

Sloth Bears are an interesting pick up, but if they go ahead with this... uh, Cambodian-inspired design I hope zoo officials are dexterous enough to include Indian-esque temples. Sloth Bears don't live in Malaysia.

If the orangutan habitat isn't going to change much -- and it is a decent size -- they need to improve the viewing areas, and I would like to see some naturalistic additions to the space. In its current evolution, there's almost nowhere to get a good picture.

Later plans include Phase II of African Adventure: The African River, Phase III of African Adventure: The African Forest, a South American section, and a new entrance.

If the zoo can implement a hippo exhibit into the current field setup, then African Adventure will be truly word class. I mean one that feels more like a riverine space rather than a large pool.

And while this isn't a dig at Fresno per se, what the hell is up with the lack of leopards?! Did the AZA forget they exist? Fresno seems to have the space to comfortably house the Big 5.

Final thought: More birds. A lot more birds.

Actually, that's not true. More later. Let me go through my pictures. My favorite part though was seeing a prehensile porcupine! I had been wanting to see one.

The new Asian area is going to have a large aviary, and the African river area supposedly is also.

The new tiger space will apparently be on the footprint of the old giraffe/antelope yards, which will vastly increase their space. New orang viewing areas are part of the plans for the Asian area.

The Fresno Zoo did have gorillas and chimpanzees in abysmal grottoes. The gorillas left in the 1990s; the chimps left in the mid-aughts. Supposedly a new African ape complex is a potential future development beyond the Asia and African river zones (which are fully funded and planned), but that depends on their tax levy being renewed. Other potential projects for the future they have mentioned are penguins and revamped South America area which would bring the birds that you crave.

Has it really been ten days?!

I saw this on the plans the zoo had posted around the area. The yard seems large, but if Tiger Trail is the current(?) gold standard, I'm not sure they have the space for three different yards. I'm in a wait and see mode, but given the quality of Africa Adventure I'm largely optimistic.

Though, are there any plans for the lemurians to be integrated into the Africa section?

They've done an excellent job with the tax revenue they've received thus far. Hopefully the locals realize this and renew the levy. I'd like to see what they could do if given the opportunity.

No 'effing penguins! If there's any current trend I dislike, it's penguins. Let's find something else to highlight, like, hornbills. To be clear though, I don't actually crave more birds. It's that the zoo feels incomplete as it currently is.

For example, the zoo's sea lion cove is fantastic. Probably the best I've seen (even if it doesn't have St. Louis' tunnel), but it feels like it should have a couple more species to integrate the message of riverine systems leading to our oceans. Proposed species: Peregrine falcon, bald eagle, river/sea otters. California Quail would be interesting too.

I'll reiterate my original statement: It's on the map. If you're in California, and have the time and wherewithal, Fresno-Chaffee Zoo is definitely worth a visit.
