African elephants, Nolwazi and Amahle, are pregnant!!!
In a Facebook post celebrating World Elephant Day the zoo's official page said, "In November of 2022, the Zoo welcomed Mabu, from another AZA facility. Upon his arrival, the Animal Care staff noticed breeding behaviors. In May of 2023, the Zoo received confirmation that both cows are pregnant and are expected to calve between September and October of 2024. These will be the first elephant calves ever born at Fresno Chaffee Zoo."

When i went to the zoo recently, I took a picture of the old Asian elephant enclosure and realized that all the shade structures where demolished! Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what happened to those shade structures and why they took them down?
I was looking through Studio Hanson Roberts' site page on Fresno Chaffee Zoo, and while the page is under construction, it does feature this interesting image:
The hippo exhibit for all intents and purposes is scrapped as per the current master plan, but why would they have this image on the site page to begin with even if it's under construction?

Most likely it was a drawing that was commissioned. It’s still work that was payed for so they can show it off in their portfolio. Those structures took up quite a bit of room in a fairly compact exhibit. They likely will have less obtrusive shade opportunities for the tapirs and babirusas incorporated into the renovated exhibit.

Zoo design firms often showcase master plans and exhibits that they design with concept drawings. A lot of that stuff never gets built in the real world, but from the designer's perspective it is finished work to show prospective clients what they can do.

I wish hippos were still a part of the master plan. But I'm quite optimistic about the zoo's future!

I went to the Fresno Zoo last week and I got some new information about the new Tapir / Babirusa enclosure. A zookeeper said the enclosure will have way more foliage including bamboo, Palm trees, and bushes.
Wonder how long that will last with hungry herbivores. I'd expect the larger plants will be protected though.

Mentioned in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park thread, Fresno's 3-year-old female southern white rhinoceros Hazina recently moved there. Fresno Chaffee Zoo still holds 2:1 southern white rhinoceroses, Tim, Kayla, and Bomani.

I'm not sure what you mean here? What old enclosures and animals are you referring to?
The new Asia section transformed a significant section of the old zoo. The current master plan outlines how the remainder of the old zoo enclosures will be transformed. There are rumors that a new entrance and the native California animal zone are the next big project, and that will apparently remove the old ape grottos and monkey cages, which are one of the last major sections of the old zoo that need to be replaced.
