Fresno Chaffee Zoo Fresno Chaffee Zoo News 2023

Can anyone give a species list for Kingdoms of Asia? Preferably including the birds that will be housed in the aviary.

Based off the current collection and all birds native to Asia, my guess is the following:
  • Mandarin duck (Aix galericulata) [Currently resides in the Tropical Rainforest Aviary)
  • Crested [wood] partridge (Rollulus rouloul)
  • Luzon bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica ssp.)
  • Red-billed leiothrix {Pekin robin} (Leiothrix lutea ssp.) (I believe @Adventuredl said this was in the collection)
  • Chinese hwamei (Garrulax canorus canorus)
  • Bali myna (Leucopsar rothschildi)
  • White-rumped shama [thrush] (Copsychus malabaricus ssp.)
(If the master plan is any indication, they may also included their Nicobar pigeons (Caloenas nicobarica nicobarica), pink-headed fruit-dove (Ptilinopus porphyreus), beautiful fruit-dove (Ptilinopus pulchellus ssp.), and pied imperial-pigeons (Ducula bicolor) into that aviary as well and all are native to a country in Asia).

Based on a banner I saw at the zoo teasing what they'll have in their collection, the showcased the following:
  • Golden white-eye (Cleptornis marchei)
  • Chinese hwamei (Garrulax canorus canorus)
  • Bali myna (Leucopsar rothschildi)
  • White-rumped shama [thrush] (Copsychus malabaricus ssp.)

The golden white-eye wouldn't isn't even native to Asia so it beats me why they would include the species in an Asian-themed aviary.

They’re not a single person on staff who knows what the species list is going to be.
Here’s what it looks like:

Species that will definitely be there include:
Malayan Tiger
Crested Partridge
Bali Mynah
Golden Crested Myna
Chinese Hwamei
Red Billed Leothrix
White Throated Ground Dove
Indochinese Box Turtle
False Gharial/Tomistoma
Sloth Bear
Asian Small Clawed Otter
Sumatran Orangutan
Siamang
Rhinoceros Hornbill
Komodo Dragon

Animals that might be there or will be there in the future:
Malaysian Giant River Turtle
Boseman’s Rainbowfish
Muntjac- most likely Reeve’s Muntjac
Hooded Pitta
Pink-Neck Fruit Dove
Asian Brown Tortoise
Betta
Other fish species
King Cobra- eventual add on

There are other species being talk about for the future, but it’s so vague there is no consensus on what they are.

Also, due to the significant rain California had, Kingdoms of Asia will most likely be delayed to just a spring opening, no exact date given. Asian hoofstock exhibit will be opening later still, no completion date on that given.

is the Asian hoofstock exhibit the old elephant exhibit? What are candidate species for this space? Malayan tapir? Babirusa?

This information is so exciting! Do you know if the zoo is still planning on opening up the area on March 18? Or did they have to push it back?

Sorry, forgot them in the species list.
Yes, it is the old elephant exhibit that will be renovated. Babirusa and Malayan Tapir will be in there when it opens with a possible addition of muntjac in the future.
What happened to the Indian rhinos?

One thing I noticed in the zoo’s master plan was an expansion to the elephant exhibit. Do they plan to add more individuals or is it just for more space? Also, do you know of any projects other than the Kingdoms of Asia for this year?

Fresno Chaffee Zoo has just welcomed a female red wolf named Daisy and they have introduced her to their new male Cypress. Maybe they are trying to revamp their red wolf breeding program? As far as I can remember, they haven’t had a litter since 2016 because they had sent their previous female to another facility years ago.

Does anyone know if these are their only two wolves, or do they still have a couple of the males they had before?

They had an elderly female Red Wolf that was at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo that was not on exhibit when I visited in December 2022. The zoo when I was there in December 2022 told me they intended on getting a new breeding pair but they didn’t tell me when. Glad to know it was sooner than later.

Well I’m excited about them having a breeding pair again! Hopefully sometime soon there will be pups out on exhibit! I’m still wondering if they have any other males though. Last time I went was February 2022 and they had a couple red wolves on exhibit. From what I remember it was a male and his son.

The son was released into the wild and I’m not sure what happened to his dad. I forgot to ask while I was there.

The father and brother of the released wolf are what I’m referring to. I saw a news video by abc30 just now showing Buckeye who was the brother of the released wolf. And as of that video from June 2022, he was still there.

Question, do you know how many kudu the zoo currently has and what their names are?

If you have information on the other antelope species as well, that would also be great! And, do you know why addax were phased out?

The wildebeest are all males according to keepers when I visited in December 2022
