Fresno Chaffee Zoo Fresno Chaffee Zoo News 2024

Hello everyone, I was recently at Chaffee Zoo today and it seems like the Asian hoof stock exhibit is complete and on exhibit were two female babirusa I couldn't find a keeper to get their names, and it seems like William the male tapir is still behind the scenes as of now. It would seem that at the moment there are no official posts announcing its completion, but I expect one to come in the coming days.

Do the tapir and babirusas share the habitat?

I hope it’s okay to post this here, as it’s not exactly news. I’m a frequent visitor of the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park and I’m excited to have the opportunity to visit the Fresno Chaffee Zoo next week! I’ve never visited before and am looking forward to seeing as many animals as I can. I was wondering if anyone is aware of connections the animals in Fresno have to San Diego. For example, I know that Mabu the Bull Elephant is the sire of our two youngest elephants at the Safari Park. And I know that the beloved Malayan Tigers at the SD Zoo, brothers Connor, Cinta and Berani, have connections to Fresno (I believe Cinta and Berani were even born there), and would love to know if the tiger(s) there currently are relatives. I also see that Fresno recently acquired some Wattled Jacanas and am curious if anyone knows whether they came from San Diego (we’ve had quite a bit of breeding success with that species). My time is pretty limited two I would also welcome any general tips on must- see animals or exhibits! Basically any information would be much appreciated and I’m really looking forward to my visit.

Fresno Zoo is a medium sized zoo that you can see in a couple hours. There is a large Africa complex and the new Asia complex that make up most of the zoo. They have one of the best sea lion exhibits ever built. Make time to see all of those areas, and you will have seen most of the zoo.

They have a new conservation center featuring their work with the local endemic blunt-nosed leopard lizard...make sure to see that, as this species is unique to Fresno Zoo. There are windows that allow you to see into the breeding program.

The reptile house is relatively small and can be seen probably in 20 minutes. The red wolf exhibit is next to the reptile house.

The rest of the zoo is a collection of old primate exhibits, an anteater exhibit that used to be their old ape grottos, some aviaries, and the large rain forest aviary that is worth walking through, but the old tropical hall in it is closed. There is also a walk-through Australia exhibit with kangaroos and emus.

BIG NEWS!!! BABY ELEPHANT BOY

Per a member email:

“Our African elephant, Nolwazi, welcomed a healthy male calf this morning. Both mom and baby are doing great and are under the watchful eyes of our animal care and vet teams.

They are having some family time behind-the-scenes until they're ready for their grand debut on the savanna. Keep your eyes peeled on our social media for all the adorable growth spurts and milestones of the little one.”

I’m elated to say the least, and even better is knowing that “Amahle” - the zoo’s other pregnant African elephant - is still expected to give birth within the next few months.
