The two baby elephant boys seem to be having the time of their lives in the habitat. That apparently means elephants at fresno getting much more youtube and internet posts and popularity than they did before. I will joke that one of the calves is named "Whispers", as a tribute to the titular Disney movie about that young elephant calf who gets lost from his mummy in the wild and embarks on a wild goose chase to find her :p

@Austin the Sengi, it's my understanding that there are three babirusa at the zoo. I know there was a male babirusa that arrived in mid June, but I can't find his name or where he came from in my notes. The SSP was not recommending that the zoo breed that male to those females, so he would be rotating on-exhibit times with the females. I personally don't think I've seen him on exhibit in a while, but I haven't been to the zoo a whole lot either.

Around 2021 the zoo owned 1.1 with unfortunately both their former male and female dying shortly after oneanother in 2022/2023. Previously they had anticipated a swap out of males (which evidently never happened).

I think they now have 2 very young females ... If they received a new male is anybody's guess (allthough I would be inclined from a curatorial perspective that get those females paired up with a genetically / age-wise suitable male for breeding.

If anyone would have definite information on a "new" male I would greatly appreciate the feedback here!

@Kifaru Bwana, so, in short, do they only have the two females that are listed in my population thread?
They have the 2 youngish females for definite ..., beyond that I cannot answer your question without concrete evidence or something more substantive ... by our esteemed poster @ChaffeeZooFan .... there is just not anyone knowing what is going on with their babirusa group for breeding!

Sorry I don't have any more concrete information. I don't currently live in Fresno as I am away at university. I'm making a trip back and will be visiting the zoo in 2 weeks. Maybe I can ask around then about the status of that other male that the zoo had.

I went to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo today. Couple things to note

1.) the Zoo now has 2 female Addaxes in their African Adventure exhibit. I was not able to find out what facility they came from, personally I’d never seen them there before and I don’t think this was ever announced either. I’m going back tomorrow so I can hopefully find out more there.

2.) the Malayan Tapirs are only out from 9:00 to 11:00 due to light sensitivity they’re having. The zoo is planning on building a shade structure for them.

3.) the cub space for Malayan Tigers is now complete. The keepers I talked to said breeding will start soon once Dara is cycling.

4.) mabu, the zoos bull elephant was separated again from the females and their calves. And the calves were not that well visible today, and all the elephants went off exhibit very early on today. More times I was out there there were keepers than there were elephants in the exhibit.

5.) the Siamangs, some of the Orangutans, the false gharial, and some of the reptiles in the reptile house were not on exhibit today.

Good to know, this might be how I missed them on my last visit!

A docent told me that the zoo rotates the siamangs and two groups of orangutans in the one exhibit, and that it is choice-based at least to some extent. I've been to Fresno 3 times now and I don't think I've ever seen the siamangs out, honestly.

that’s weird about the siamangs and the orangutans. The last time I was there they were all out together. They even had access to the habitat today but the siamangs didn’t feel like coming out. Orangutans were coming and going. I forget how many the zoo has.
