@MennoPebesma why are the ex Living Coast's females, Grace and Tunanta not on the list? Have both females passed away in recent months? If they have can you please inform me when and how they died? Tunanta was very young too pass if indeed she did. At the age of 16 Tunanta is\was middle aged at the most. Seals and Sealions can live well into their 40's. Babyface the Common Seal who resides at The National Seal Sanctuary in Gweek,Cornwall,England is elder than Grace and Tunanta put together.

Both Grace and Tunanta have indeed died. Grace passed away at the end of last year, I don't know the exact cause of death but she was already at an advanced age. Tunanta died this spring, autopsy showed that she had quite a few stomach ulcers. Until one day before her death, however, zookeepers did not notice any change in her behaviour.

South American fur seals live to be about 12 to 30 years old, but most don't get much older then 20. The females usually become older than the males. Grace was already a bit old at 19, and one of the oldest South American fur seals in Europe. Tunanta was indeed too young at 14.
 
Cape fur seal Bára died today at Zoo Praha. Bára came to the zoo from the wild in 1991. She was probably born in 1990 and thus lived to be 31, which is quite old for a fur seal.
 
From Frankfurt Zoo, Cape fur seals Emil and Samu were moved yesterday to the aquarium in São Paulo, Brazil. The two brothers will live together there. In Frankfurt, only Otti, the father of the two brothers, remains. Frankfurt Zoo is planning to keep South American sea lions. The first two females will soon arrive from Valencia. They will keep Otti company.
 
In Zoo Augsburg, Cape fur seal female Waganga passed away. No clear cause of death could be found in the autopsy.

In AquaZoo Leeuwarden, South-American fur seal male Miguel passed away a few weeks ago. There were no signs of illness so his death was completely unexpected. No clear cause of death could be found in the autopsy, but it became clear that he had chronic liver and kidney problems. After his death, AquaZoo Leeuwarden decided to stop holding South American fur seals. The last female, Clara, moved to Wildlands in Emmen.
 
In Jyllands Park-Zoo, the 18-year-old Cape fur seal male Bubber died last week. He suddenly became very ill. He turned out to have an acute peritonitis, so it was decided to euthanise him. It has been decided that two-year-old Thabo, son of Bubber, will be the new breeding male in the future.

There is also good news from Jyllands Park-Zoo. Last Friday a Cape fur seal was born. Father of the cub is Bubber, mother is Robby. For Robby this is her second cub.

Sad news from Wildlands. Last weekend a South American fur seal was born dead. A day before the birth, zookeepers saw the young moving in its mother's belly. The autopsy showed that there was never any air in the lungs, so the cub did not breathe. It was a male. Mother Aruna is doing well, since yesterday she is back in the fur seal group.

0,1 Julinka (??/??/1990, Wild) - died in March 2022. Estimated age 32 years.
 
In Wroclaw Zoo, a Cape fur seal was born on 13 June. It is a male. For mother Mandisa this is her first cub. Father of the cub is Nelson. As soon as the cub is able to swim well, he and his mother will be able to be seen in the large enclosure together with the other fur seal.

Hello Menno, do you happen to know if or when three northern fur seals hot out of Europe. Bursa zoo posted a video of three seals with the caption “Northern fur seals”. Pebbles may have sadly passed away before the arrival of the three animals.

Bursa Zoo indeed has northern fur seals since recently. A species holding request I recently did at Species360 (ZIMS) revealed this. They should have five, two males and three females. The same list showed that Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover had the same number of Northern Fur seals less then before. So most likely the animals come from Hannover.

And Bursa Zoo does indeed not have Cape fur seals anymore.
 
That’s a bummer:/ . While I don’t ever recall seeing Northern Fur seals ever in my life I am more biased towards cape fur seals so that is a big loss for me.
 
The two Cape fur seals of Zoo Rostock recently moved to Zoo Frankfurt. They were born here in 1997 and 1998 and came to Rostock in 2001. This means that Zoo Rostock temporarily has no fur seals.

Their current enclosure, which was opened in 1992, was outdated and could not be repaired. It will be demolished at the end of 2022, after which a new 2500 m2 enclosure for the seals and fur seals will be built in 2023.

He has been given the name Alfie.
 
Three young Cape fur seals from Kolmardens Djurpark in Sweden have recently moved to other zoos. On 18 September, 1-year-old female Nahla moved to Wroclaw Zoo. They hope she will have young there in the future. On 14 October, the two 1-year-old males Franz and Dragon moved to Zoo Frankfurt. Here they now live with two older females who came from Zoo Rostock earlier this year.

Besides this list, this time I have also made a short overview of what, as far as I know, happened within the European population last year.

Births
South American fur seal: Only one young was born this year, this was at Wildlands. Unfortunately, it was stillborn.

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, 3 Cape fur seals were born in Europe this year. They are one male and two females.

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, no northern fur seals were born last year.

Deaths
South American fur seal: To my knowledge, three South American fur seals died last year. The males Miguel (11) and Keto (7) and one of the females in Wildlands. I don't know (yet) which female died in Wildlands.

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, eight Cape fur seals died last year. Males Meloun (20), Bubber (18), Otti (19), Marti (?) and Nico (25). And females Bara (31), Julinka (32) and Waganga (14).

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, no northern fur seals died last year.

Transfers
South American fur seal: To my knowledge, 1 South American fur seal moved to another zoo last year. Female Clara moved from AquaZoo Leeuwarden to Wildlands.

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, eight Cape fur seals were moved to another zoo last year. Two of them went outside Europe, to Sao Paulo.

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, 5 northern fur seals were moved to another zoo last year. Two males and three females moved from Hannover Zoo to Bursa Zoo in Turkey. As this zoo is not in Europe, it is not in the updated list.

Number of holders
South American fur seal: Last year, AquaZoo Leeuwarden stopped keeping South American fur seals.

Cape fur seal: To my knowledge, two zoos stopped keeping Cape fur seals last year. One of them, Zoo Rostock, will however start keeping this species again in the future after renovation of the enclosure.

Northern fur seal: To my knowledge, no zoos stopped keeping Northern fur seals last year, nor were there any new holders in Europe.

Future holders
To my knowledge, there are currently no zoos looking to become a new holder of any of the three fur seal species in the future.
