Southern Encounter Aquarium and Kiwi House (Closed) Further Christchurch Earthquake

So the latest information I have heard is not good at all, however it is not verified yet either, as its straight off twitter:

Southern Encounter Aquarium is gone, with most livestock killed.

The kiwi were definitely evacuated to Orana Park however, and are fine.

kiwi, tuatara and mudfish are out, they are going to try for the frogs next but building is not stable

from a NZ fish forum
We got the kiwi out thanks to daves bravery once again, he also got the canterbury mudfish out to travis and is currently trying to keep the life support going but it may be a lost cause. I was cleaning an aquarium at the entrance when it hit and was knee deep in water evacuating people in the first few minutes before the first aftershook. we lost several tanks at first and many fish were on the floor but we were helpless to save most of them. the dome ontop of the building collapsed inward on the left hand side and more came down after the first aftershock. Im pretty proud that all the staff got everyone out without major injury considering the amount of water and broken acrylic/glass everywhere. As the phones are obviously playing up atm i cant really update on if we will survive this but realistically i cant see us being open in that building anytime soon if at all and unless power is restored and the building stablised its not gonna look good for the remaining fish as i doubt they will let us back on site but im sure dave is giving it his best as they couldnt stop him before. As for me i lost 14 tanks including my beloved 1200ltr and all but 3 fish so prty much my entire fishroom.

p.s anyone hiring a Aquarist :-(

UPDATE: Kiwi out, Mudfish out, Tuatara and Gekos out and hes gonna try for the turtles and frogs next but it sounds like the buildings not well. I wish i could get hold of him maybe the two of us could try and get some stingrays out but thats prolly a bit unrealistic

Whoa, that really sucks about the aquarium, I really hope the building stays up so they get as much out as possible.

Thanks for the update felix.

Felix can you post a link to that site so we can follow any subsequent news?

Sounds like the aquarium will be a write-off, but that's not surprising and certainly the most important thing is that all of the people there are apparently safe.

Great news about Chlidonias. Best of luck coping with the devastation, and best wishes winging from the UK

Terrible news about the aquarium, and indeed much of the city. Good to know that Chlidonias and family are ok.

Glad to hear that Chlidonias and family are ok, thinking of the people of Christchurch at this difficult time.

Chlidonias and his family are okay...

Excellent news! Thanks for letting us know!

Sorry to hear about the aquarium, here's hoping they can save a few more of the inhabitants before it's too late.

Good to hear Chlidonias and family are safe. I hope the people of Christchurch will stay strong through this difficult period.

Good news about chli and his family, please pass on all our good wishes to him.

Hi people, Chlidonias is fine but still without power and water but his phone was back on today so i talked to him for about an hour which was good. All other staff are safe and as only one persons allowed on site atm ill see if i can bike to his place tomorrow as im not far and sitting around home sucks. As for the Aquarium its still to early to know as they havent red stickered it yet. The generators are still getting refuelled and Critters such as the kiwi, tutes and gekos have been transferred to Orana and several others have been released and will continue to be until theres no longer access to the site. Its all up to the engineers i guess but each extra day is hope.

Im sure Orana will put out a release when they know something for sure.

That's for the update, good to know everyone is safe...

Best of luck down there, were raising money for you as fast as we can in Auckland... Let us know if you need anything else down there...

Jeremy

I just joined to say how sorry I am to hear about this, although thankful that the staff are all ok. We have visited Christchurch several times over the years and enjoyed our visits to the aquarium. Our best wishes to everyone in Christchurch.
