Ross Park Zoo Future at the zoo

This doesn't surprise me too much. It's one of the worst zoos I have ever visited, although I know they have been trying to improve the past few years. It will be interesting to see where some of the animals end up.

Animals dont necessarily leave when a zoo looses accreditation. Toronto lost theirs in 2012 and I dont think a single animal has been removed due to the status change. But the losses of membership was due to governance not animal welfare so maybe that makes all the difference in the world. The effect on Toronto until recently was minimal. Its been increasingly hard to get other zoos to send animals and now that the zoo has passed the two year grace period the AZA gives to get your house in order. I can post a Toronto document outlining all the things the AZA can do to non members after that two year grace period if anyone is interested.

I was curious about this, so Toronto Zoo has not regained its AZA accreditation yet? What can the zoo do now to get it back? The elephants have already been sent to PAWS, which AZA did not approve.

Since Toronto lost its accreditation for a governance issue (i.e. city council overriding a decision made by the Zoo), there is no point in them re-applying yet, as the governance issue has not been resolved. The Zoo and Board of Management is trying to work with City Council and AZA to resolve the issue so that they can re-apply. Unfortunately, the municipal election happens this October and that is likely to slow things down (but that could also help if certain councillors don't return)

Here is a link to the last discussion about accreditation at a Board of Management meeting, with both CAZA and AZA providing an analysis on animal care standards:
